I follow iranian online media and if I had to buy stocks of political figures in Iran I would buy Ghasem Soleimani & Javad Zarif stocks. These 2 guys are popular even among the Zedde Velayate Faghih people. Above is a selfie of GS. I can understand Zarif's popularity but GS? What am I missing?

I believe the picture is kharazi (the ambassador).

He is connected with both "reformists" and Rahbar via marriage.

You are not missing anything. I actually wonder how you could understand Zarifs popularity. There is nothing to understand here as these guys are all parts and pieces of the same sick and murderous puzzle called ISI. When any of these guys become popular, it only indicates the complete bisavaadi o heghaarat of the population that makes such low lifes become popular because no one of those guys has ever done anything to warrant any kind of popularity among sane people. Hitler was way more popular in Germany but were all those guys sane? No. Germans were not sane at those times. If these jaanevars are our popular figures, then we have to accept we are full of shit and one heck of insane people.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.
Zarif is the only one in the ISI that speaks english & doesn't reek.

Posting a thread about Ghasem is like putting out the honey for the bees. It will sure pull in playboy and general wherever they are This guy is a made-for-TV general. There is not one documented military campaign that he can get credit for. A bunch of AP and Reuter reporters are sitting around waiting for him to show up in some neighborhood to credit him with victory. Fallujah has been taken over almost a year and it is just 20 miles outside Baghdad. What is he waiting for? Have you heard of Iran and Hezbollah in syria lately? Nothing. They are both bogged down there. US kills more ISIS in one day than Soleimani in his life.

BS. He is 60 years old. He needs couple of Advils in the morning just to get out of bed. Even if true, this just shows he is not worth more than a foot soldier. No military commander of his stature, if true, should go down and do hand to hand combat. That's what infantry is there for. He should sit at HQ and come up with a winning plan so ISIS doesn't camp out 20 miles outside Baghdad.

What you're missing about GS is that first of all most people realize and recognize that this guy's religious beliefs (right or wrong) are genuine and not motivated by post, position, money, or popularity.

2nd most Iranians recognize not only his past contributions and sacrifices to protect and preserve Iran's borders but more so his genuine love of the country and doing everything in his power to protect Iran and Iranians from foreign threats (be it extremists in the neighboring countries or foreign threats in the region and beyond).

3rd, most Iranians appreciate the fact that GS funds his operations and units without getting any financial aid or support from the Iranian government or selling of Iranian natural resources. He funds his operations and units that are designed to protect Iranians and Iranian borders from money he collects from other countries and that is a something extremely rare in the world and history all together.

4th, there is just something attractive and charismatic for most people from any country or culture about a man who is not only a fearless warrior and not afraid of dying in the battlefield, but at the same time not afraid of showing his emotions and sorrow by crying in public for his fallen comrades.

Where am I wrong? You want to portray him as a competent commander, go ahead but what are these silly attempts to make him look like he is actually actfighting on front lines. Which military sends their one and only commander, the most valuable asset that can draw battle plans to win the war to front lines to thorw grenades and clear buildings. Look at his pictures. He can barely stand up. You are telling me he in running gun battles and firing RPGs? Is this how generals are used in the battle these days? It is all PR. Let me take those US air raids off the table then let's see what the good general is capable of.

Now that is an interesting disclosure. So he is running a mercenary army. The Qods force as I understand it has no domestic mission. It is designed from the ground up to fight outside Iran. Name me one country who does that? Imagine if the US military had a dedicated force with its own commander all paid by foreign governments working outside the military chiefs. I wonder what Barak Obama has to say about it.

1st, that's one of the things that makes him unique.

2nd, a mercenary army is one that is answerable to those that pay it. GS's army on the other hand collects money from others and still keeps them accountable and answerable to itself instead of vice versa.

3rd, As is US government taxes the entire world with its dollar and oil-exchange and even then you see instances, such as Iran contra affairs, where CIA and army would fund their covert operations from money collected from other countries.
