I want to take a look back at today's game, what positives/negatives
there were, and what we learned from the experience. PLEASE! If you
want to gripe or make emotional remarks, there are tons of other threads
for you. Here, I want to look at facts and analysis. Please watch the game
again, keep your emotions out, learn something from it, and then contribute.

Before the game, on some thread, I posted my thoughts on how we should
approach this game, or rather how I thought Branco would approach this
game. To me Branco's strategy was clear and no surprise. He wanted to
play with a very defensive posture until the last 20-25 minutes, make some
changes then to give us more attacking posture, and try to snatch a win,
while being content with a draw if it turned out that way. As it turned out,
that's exactly how our team played; A very cautious, defensive game.
We got the least result we aimed for. In that respect, we
succeeded in achieving our goal.

What is disturbing to me, however, is the way we achieved our goal.

Failed tactic #1: If you watch the game again, contrary to what most
of us would have thought (using our right side), our midfielders were intent
on sending balls to Hashemian on the left side to develope our attacks.
Mohammad Hubail, Bahrain's right mid, is a key player in Bahrain's attacks.
What our players had been instructed to do was to use the space emptied
by Hubail's runs upfield to our advantage to create opportunities for us.
This tactic never worked for two reasons: a) Hashemian is NOT a winger.
He neither has the skills nor the speed to fulfill this purpose. b) Mohammad
Hubail is a fast player who can recover quickly and run back to fill his
emptied position. There is nothing you can do about Hubail's speed and
ability to recover, but we could have still used Hubail's emptied space
if we had used the right person, or rather the right formation and lineup.
I think you all know I have tremendous respect for what Ali Daei has done
for our football. However, IMO Daei was invisible in this game. Hashemian
was doing his best, but he was in a no-win situation because of the way
he was being used. One way we could have (and should have) taken
advantage of this would have been to take Daei out, move Hashemian
upfront, and bring in a player like Kazemian who can play well on both the
right and left side, has speed, decent dribbling ability, and excellent
passing ability. We could have even had more success had we changed
Karimi and Hashemian's positions.

FAILED TACTIC #2: It wasn't that we weren't trying to use our right
side. Only that Bahrain did such a great job to neutralize it. Our failure
on the right side was compounded by playing Ka'bi
in right D. Ka'bi had clearly been instructed not to leave his position much
to participate in our attacks, but since he is not a pure defender, Kia had
no choice but to move back to help him. Had we employed a defender with
better defensive abilities, Kia would have been freed up more to help
out with our attacks. As it was, with Kia and Ka'bi both pinned down
by defensive responsibilities, our attacking right side was completely
ineffective, with only Karimi to rely on who was double and triple covered,
making him useless too.

Failed tactic #3: While on the paper, we appear to have done great on
defense, it came at a cost. Our defence and defensive mids were instructed
not to move too far up, fearing Bahrain's deadly counters from the wings.
Even Nekoonam and Zandi hardly ever moved up past Bahrain's defensive 1/3!
But this goes against our natural abilities. Our players were doing what
they were told, but that put them in a very unfamiliar territory. With our
players staying back, there was a huge gap between our defenders and
attackers, essentially giving up the whole midfield to Bahrain, and making
it even more difficult for us to put together any sort of attack.

There may be other reasons for our failures that I hoper others will point
out. My conclusion is this: While I don't have an issue with playing
defensively to gain points from this game, I think we did it the wrong way.

a) Instead of pulling everyone back defending, we could have started
our defence in Bahrain's defensive 1/3, playing a pressing game all the
way from front to back.
b) Branko's formation and/or lineup was wrong for his tactics. If he
didn't know it BEFORE the game started, it became painfully obvious 20
minutes into the game. He should have shown courage to make the
necessary changes. I don't dislike Branko, but I'm getting quite frustrated
with his stubbornness to use "big-name" players + his 4-2-3-1.
Something's got to give here, or this stubbornness could cost us!

c) once again, I have to critisize Daei's presence in this game. I don't
have an issue with Daei playing, but it's got to make sense. Not only was
Daei ineffective in this game, but his presence made other players ineffective
as well.

Now, feel free to add your input guys!

Failed tactics:

Assuming that branco went for a possible tie, with possibilty of putting himself in winning situation in last 2o minutes:
Exclusion of azizi out of list 18 was a mistake: Mobali and azizi, and somewhat kazemian are the only players capable of changing pace and offensive posture in the current squad.
Poor scouting: while branco's bajenagh in bahrain was well informed about our players and tactics, our team had no "badal" for bahrain's tactics. We were focused on our own strenghts rather than exploiting their weakness or countering their strenght.a well prepared technical staff, would have switched hashemian earlier.
Reliance on karimi: branco's luck is proportionally related to "begir nagir" game of karimi.karimi is team player once every 3-4 games. There is no contingency plan in place for "nagir" days.

Lesson learned: is not the best 11 that can win the game or at least play it decently.Being placed in right position counts too. For god's sake, we are not at the level of France's professionalism yet just to field our best 11 regardless of position and expect results. 4 players, should not have been sacrificed in their positioning to accomodate one!

another thing learned is that bahrains passing (and also other teams') is more accurate than the iranians'. whenever iran tried to build up an attack slowly and patiently (arsenal style), they did everything necessary: play the ball around to give time for some players from defense and midfield making runs upfront etc. but then everything came down like a house of cards with one terribly wrong pass.
then everyone had to run back as fast as they could.
this cost the players a lot of energy, while the bahrainis were concentrating on counters and didnt get as tired.

I think Branco should have learned the following important lessen; a coach has to be flexible with his formation. More often than not, he uses his 4-2-3-1 formation with the familiar faces. He should change the formation at least in the second half to counter our opponents’ strategy and tactics.
I think Branco’s tactics are open books for our opponents. All our opponents know that our right flange is stronger; so they form their attacks from our left flange and would use appropriate tactic to neutralize our right flange, by changing our formation we can remedy the shortcoming of our left flange.

He should not rely on the same player(s) in each and every game, regardless of their readiness or usefulness, a case in point is Daie. Have some guts bring some new player(s) in different game to make the team unpredictable. Our team has such a depth; we are not short of talents.

Chiro did not use to sub the players and Branco subs the player in the final minutes of the game. If the game is not going anywhere and some players are not effective; why wait until the 87th minutes to bring in someone.

Finally, I hope that our team would perform as they did in AC04, we were terrible when we faced Oman, but game after game we improved. We still have time to fix the problems.

There are some good points brought up under this thread.
I think we all would agree that TM used the best players in her arsenal, there are no valid excuses for our performance other than tactical ones.

I am not even going to talk about individuals other than mentioning that we really played with 9 players, Daei and Karimi were totally useless. Not only they did not contribute in any positive way but to my surprise and dismay neither one was subbed out.

I think in this particular game Bahrain was clearly the better team and frankly we were very lucky to walk away with a point.

In conclusion, making the team formations around the players rather than tactics and strategy has made our game plans very much predictable to our opponents.
I would have liked to see Kazemian on the filed rep.

p.s, sorry can’t help but to squeeze in a little shoar and commentary at the end, I honestly respect Daei for all he has done for TM, however I think by pressing on to stay (by whom I don’t know) on the roster for whole 90 minutes of every fricking game has seriously damaged his image and certainly IMO his legacy.
Daei haya kon TM ro raha con

good points by iranpaak. remember how well karel brueckner changed the czech formation whenever they were in trouble in euro 2004?

there are more practice sessions and time needed for branko to try new systems when iran is in trouble. he also needs to change his mindset and see that 4-2-3-1 is not the only formulation accepted by FIFA.

Great observation biAzar jAn. The more I watch this game, the more it is
obvious to me that either our formation, lineup, or both needed/need to
change. Branko's insistence on playing ALL his "stars" in the 4-2-3-1
formation has made us a very predictable team. It is not just Juricic, but
any average footbal fan knew before we stepped onto the field which players
we were going to use in which positions, and their roles in the team. Almost
all of us knew our left side was going to be comprised of three players all
playing out of position: Nosrati, Zandi, and Hashemian. Almost every chance
created by Bahran came through their #29, Hubail, on this paralyzed left side.
We could never solve the problem with this one player. What is disturbing
is that it could have been solved rather easily by making one or two key
substitutions, namely Kazemian and Mobali. It's killing me to know what
Branko's reasoning is, but as always, he is trying more to justify his
decisions than to admit the mistake and resolve it. We keep saying this
is the deepest, most-talented team we've ever had, and I believe it is.
But what's the use of having all this talent if they're hardly ever going
to be used?

What did we Learn?
1) we can not play with nike ball.
2) we should not allow our players to become Legionnaire.
3) we should add some new excuses to the list, such as shirt color, new sucks, heavy shinguards, tight shorts, ......
4) we should listen to Shajarian while playing soccer
5) call up Parvin, Hejazi, Poor haydari, Talebi, Mayeli, or .... if we ran out of big names in TM,
5) why we cannot play soccer the way we do in PS2.
6) take air pump in case the ball is light
7) take some Adidas stickers and cover Nike sign on each ball
8) be happy with each point we earn, and believe in destiny! ( mah o khorshid o falak!!)
9) always help ferdosipoor with 90 show
10) take mehralizadeh, dadkan, reza zadeh, abedzadeh, and in case of emergency, " Ostad Asadi" for all away games

and finally,
Make it to WC2006, fire Bronko and bring Talebi as Head Coach!

1) The referee was from Malesia and we had bad expiereience with a referee like
that before so I think Iran should have protested against the choice.
2)Bahrain and Arabic team study our football carefully before they play Iran.
It whould have been wiser if we tried with a surprise line up or substitute like
Azizi instead od Daei or Karimi.
3) We should have tried long range kicks like the one shooted by NN.
4) A strategic substitute like taking a defender out and sending a midfielder in
to strength the midfield
5) If they use load speackers to insult our players we can too in Tehran. Iff must
watch for the ref chosen for the game in Tehran and speculators must plan
for the game in Tehran
