Thanks Ali. I we already tried the O2 shop we got it from and we are out of warranty period so they won't do anything.

By the way Sly, your suggestion didn't work. It appears the apps are gone

A question, does your phone pick-up your wifi network at all? If it does and it doesn't connect I am positive it is just your router. In any case, go to a McDonald's, a Starbucks or, lol, an Apple Store and try to connect to the store's wifi.

^^^ No, it tries to detect the wifi but doesn't find it. I will try it somewhere else as suggested and see whether it works.

I doubt it's the router. Why should it be when everything else (laptop, my Sony Xperia) works?

My router and others I've seen do have that problem if you have many devices connecting and exchanging ips. It's a simple check, anyway.

Behrouz jan, it's very strange! If it had been a 5 year old iphone and a 5 year old itunes version, I'd understand but nowadays, you will not lose your apps. It just doesn't happen. I wonder if you had the "automatic sync" on and synced your pc before you saved the backup. But even if you did that, you should still have your apps. So I don't get it...

To make sure, go to: C: --> Users --> your user (e. g. Behrouz) --> Music --> itunes --> itunes Media --> Mobile Applications

See if your apps are there. If you can't find them there then I guess you have lost them but I hardly doubt t.....

^^^ Thanks Sly. I checked this and there are no apps. I think I may have screwed up somewhere as I synchronised twice, once after the reseting. So this may have overwritten the applications forlder with the factory settings one.

Anyway, there were only a couple of paid apps which I think can be downloaded again for free as we have already paid, provided of course we can get the effing wifi work again!

Besides, my wife whose phone this is, really can't be bothered with all this hassel so we probably get a different phone, anything but an apple product this time.

it maybe a WPS problem? you know sometimes you have your router and device set to get IP or WiFi automatically (instead of putting the pass code in) and that sometimes has problems. I had similar problem with my hP laser printer and wifi. I connected a damn cat5 cable and forgot the wireless. lol but for the iphone this should never happen cuz you cant hook a network cable to it.
it also maybe bluetooth related.(that has also cause problems for me in the past)
otherwise it is a defect as other ppl mentioned.

    Thanks meyti.
But one thing I noticed after resetting the phone was that wifi worked for a few hours, then it disappeared again. Once the phone went on stand by, it couldn't detect the wifi anymore. Call me lazy but I am not going to connect to itunes and reset my phone each time I need to use the internet for 2 minutes!

There is no apple store in my city so we took the phone to an o2 shop where they have wifi and the phone failed to detect it. we also tried the pub where there is wifi, again without success.

So the phone has developed a fault. Another thing we noticed is that suddenly the battery has started to wear down very quickly without the phone being used. I guess everything has it's age, even iphones, but I would have expected this to be a little more robust.

Now, we want to get a new phone for my wife that is not an iphone and found that iphone does not write contacts to SIM card!!!!! I mean what an oversight by apple not to have this functionality that all other manufacturers have. Another attempt by apple to persuade you to stay with them. It's horrendous.

    Behrooz Jaan;

Sounds to me an internal phone problem...
I have used Apple's Support (online) and they are really good.
If this is a known issue they will tell you and will stay in touch with you until the problem is solved.

If I were you I would update the operating system on that iphone and then check the settings again make sure the "Ask to join a network" is set to ON.
for now you can also configure your iphone manually, I know it may sound like too much work but it is easy and enjoyable thing to do...(plus your wife will think you are her hero lol)... I know she probably already does...she'd better! but...anyway...

to configure iphone manually go to wifi settings, (in case you dont know what IP address your router provides) you can get it off your computer or the iphone when it's working. In your computer you can go to start and (if its not windows 7 go to run) and type cmd , once you got the DOS screen type in ipconfig or ipconfig /all then scroll back up to see your IP which starts with 192.168....
use a different number for the last digit like if it 10 use 15 etc. so there wont be a conflict and that is it. save that address in your iphone for now until the issue is resolved.
this way you have to know the name of your router and then the security code (it is usually WPA or WPA2) you can log in to your router and look it up if you want to...
I dont know how much of an expert you are in networking stuff but if you need any more help configuring your iphone manually let us know.

I hope this issue is resolved soon because those iphones are not cheap! my sister bought me 1 from kuwait and she still paid a lot of money but she lost hers in the airport in tehran a few days ago and the idiot who found it would not return it (he turned it off cuz she started to call it n sent msgs to it/him) :-(

Behrouz jan, too bad your apps are gone then. I'm still surprised about it.

About the wifi, as Meyti says, there must be an internal problem with your wife's phone. Because I've had my 3GS for 2.5 years now and I know at least 5 others who have the 3GS and it still works for all of us without any problem. I guess your wife was just very unlucky. But that's how a brand loses customers too I guess.

meyti, thanks for the recommendations. I have tried some of them and will try the others.

Sly, I admit to having a bias against iphones. I told her not to fall for it but she insisted this is what she wanted, a bit of a domestic there, but nothing major

Here is a strange thing, this morning I tried the detect button again and it found my router and asked for the password. I gave it the password and it started working. So for now we are connected, but I am sure it won't last.

Behrouz jan, try to remember what you did with it yesterday and do the same thing everyday.

btw. same thing happened to my sister's iphone

she did a reset networking settings and it seems to work for now...but it seems like a common issue with 3GS.

My wife's works in fits and bursts. A few days ago she turned it off and on again and it worked for a day. But there has been nothing since Monday.
I am sure it's a fault with the handset but it's strange because it appeared all of a sudden while everything was fine for a couple of years since when she bought it.
