    Babylon search engine

Anyone know how to remove this? I think it's a virus and it's very annoying. I was trying to download a codec for Media Player from CNET and somehow ended up with Babylon on my firefox browser. It diverts my searches and my webpages have a mind of their own. I have looked for it on the computer but can't find it. I have reset to a previous date and even uninstalled firefox. Nothing works.

By the way, any good links to a codec? My media player has sound but no picture. I tried divx and it's crap. I don't trust any download anymore unless someone can recommend a site.

    Thanks

Hmm, weird. Mate, use Google Chrome. Better, faster, IMO.

Download VLC player for a media player or get the K-Lite Codec pack.

    Behrooz ,

I haven't had this problem as my protection package is in full activation and has actually stopped Babylon from downloading from the get go and put it on black list.but check this link and hopefully it will help you.

    Thanks guys.

Kaz, I downloaded VLC but it's not very good quality as the videos get blurred every few seconds. I need WMP to work.

aziz go to your control panel and programs section and see if it is installed there.
    if it is uninstall it.
if it is not there right click on the firefox menu (if the menu is not there right click on the top where it usually is) then uncheck the babylon crap.
you may have to look for it under sub menu (I am on a mac and cant tell you exactly where sorry)..
I hate all of those damn annoying menu/search bars, I am not even sure about googles since they talk about them tracking everyone.

as for VLC, it is all right but I would not associate all my A/V files with it, especially if you are running windows 7

    meyti,
Control panel is the first place I looked as you normally would. But it's not listed there. I also looked under Tools/Add ons and disabled it there but it's still showing and diverting my pages. So whatever this bug is, it is a little more intricate than a normal installed programme. It's a virus in my view.

oh OK I know now (or am pretty sure you have a trojan kind of bug/thread)...
what I would do is (if you have an anti virus update it) or find a good anti virus site which is free. I used to use sites like Panda or Norton but I think the suckers started to charge? I think AVG is still free. Try to find a site where they would clean your computer for free.
reboot in Safe Mode with Networking
go to the site and run their program.
it may take over 2 hours but the last 2 times I did this for my friends, it worked and cleaned their computer and registry etc.

you can also check in CMD (dos window)
    run cmd
click in the black screen (dont have to type them in caps I just put cap on the start of command)
    type Cd\windows\system32 hit enter
then do a Dir *.exe and hit enter
count the number of the files with .exe extension *like 27)
then type Dir *.exe /a hit enter
count the files and see if there is one more which is hidden.
if there are more .exe files than before the chances are it is the thread. but since it copes itself to diff. places and file names its almost impossible to manually delete it, (in safe more of course).

also you can look into your startup commands by going to Start Run and typing msconfig
then on the last tab look at the start up files...if you see HMK or things of that nature then you can uncheck them.but as soon as you boot they will come back. You can try though and come back in safe more with networking to run the antivirus or anti adware.
    good luck.

My understanding is that it is not a virus , nor a trojan.users install it when it comes bundled with other stuff that users download and install.

Babylon is truly a bitch to remove. I could give you a procedure to remove it, but it's not worth it. I wouldn't even bother. Export your favorites to a file and uninstall your browser altogether. Then reinstall.

F***ing CNet has really gone down the toilet. They keep fooling people into downloading these stupid download-managers that have nothing but K**sher-ware (that's what I call adware and spyware).

Thanks mashdi. I will try that when I get home.

    BT,
I already uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it. But the Babylon appears on the google search page! It's very annoying. It doesn't divert my pages every time, but once a while it does and I have to open chrome. Firefox is my favourite browser.

Ok, not sure if this is serious. My Control Panel doesn't have "Programs (software)"

Go to Control Panel, click Programs (software).
Go to Tools> Options> and go to change your order, the Home. ( f.e www.google.de) and click OK.
I suppose this is asking me to change the home page? I have done it but the next step is ambiguous.

Sorry but perhaps the instructions are not applicable to XP.

Windows 7 Control Panel has " Programs & Features " option where you can uninstall a program.

LOL @ BT I hear you! loud and clear.

    Mashdi jaan thanks....
we used Kaspersky anti virus/security program at work when I was in UK , it is a good program but it is not free.
heh I am using the free version of AVG and it has been really good , I hate Norton and McAfee bcs they are worse than viruses. they bug the hell out of you ever time you want to open a new page/tab , they even stop your secure bank pages!! I mean those ppl (like the banks) are paying a lot of money for their sec. certificates and these norton etc programs cant even recognize any of that crap. they just stop everything as if it was a porn site! (lol may be they got a point)? lol j/k.

Besides I think Firefox is the Best browser when it comes to managing your Cookies. I recommend everyone to set their cookies to where they can choose which ones to accept and which ones to refuse. It may seem a little cumbersome at first but I am used to it and I have No problems. it save you a lot of trouble down the line..(Of course I dont visit those ''aan chenaani'' web sites either (any more heh lol j/k ) but those are the ones who will get you in trouble. they are sick ppl running those sites. (or like those poker game sites eekh)!

    regards
