So scared of what's going to happen next to Iran...

We were afraid of not becoming another Afghanistan with Taliban in charge .. then another Iraq when Bush bombed it back to dirt ... then another Syria with all the casualties and destruction and fundamentalist rise and foreign interference.... and now worried about not becoming another Venezuela .... and that's not to mention concerns for environmental and social disasters to come ...

By the way, rather than being a constant, the title of the thread should become a function of a variable as it is changing so often and so fast!

Or we can leave it as it is, and not too long from now it becomes a part of our historical heritage which we should then register it with UNESCO.

i tried to explain this in an earlier post in this thread.
$ getting expensive in iran by itself is not going to lead
to economic meltdown or protests.it's a tool the gov is
using to put an extra tax on the rich who can afford to buy
$.it makes imported and luxury items more expensive for the rich.
what we need to watch is the inflation rate to see if this policy
has an impact on the masses.so far it seems not to have
any massive effect on that front.in the past 2 years $ has
gone up from 3000 to 5000 that's a 67% increase which is
clearly not reflected in the inflation rate since iran is self sufficient
in producing many basic items so they have been able to tame inflation.
note that the year to year inflation rate has actually declined in the past
year as rial kept getting devalued.

it seems to me the idea is to increase the price of imported goods as much
as they can so people start buying iranian made products as the recent
propaganda is urging them to do so.in other words soon even junk chinese
stuff will be too expensive to buy and people will turn to buying iranian made
appliances and small house hold items, etc.that's not a bad policy if it succeeds
in increasing employment and revive the manufacturing base of the economy.

I am not good at economics at all , and I am not joking here.
Hence, while I agree with you on the importance of inflation rate, I do not understand the idea proposed above regarding devaluating Rial to increase the prices of imported and luxury goods, resulting in a) putting extra tax on rich and b) turning people to buy domestic products which in turn would create more employment and revive manufacturing base of economy.

Would it be easier and more logical for the government to:

1) put or increase existing tariff on imported and luxury goods
2) close down all the unregistered ports and means of smuggling goods (I am not talking about the poor porters Kurdistan or petty smugglers in Baluchistan and other corners of the country who have no other means of getting by, I am talking about what ex-president Mahmoud called "our smuggler brothers" of Revolutionary Guards
3) revisit agreements and laws that allow easy access to local market for the foreign goods at the expense of local productions
4) support the domestic production by financially enabling them, pass laws to protect and support them, facilitate their access to imports of necessary items for their production at a reasonable exchange value, enable them to export their goods easier by cutting down the bureaucratic rules
5) redesign the education system to feed educated white and blue collar labor to the domestic production market on a calculated manner and based on the need of the industries
6) put effort into programs to introduce new technology to the domestic producers
7) put programs in place to keep up with international levels of quality and standards
and so on ...

instead of damaging the value of Rial and causing panic and chaos?

Breaking News:

Following the sharp devaluation of Rial (40% in 4 months), Iranian currency is changed to Roll (not to be confused with Russian Ruble).

If your comment is in reply to mine, then I should say of course!

I was just saying that to me increasing tariff alone would be a more logical way than what Playboy was mentioning.
The rest of the items pish-kesh! They either take long and fruit in long term or to begin with this system is neither have the intention nor the capability of doing them.
As I said I still I think tariff would have been safer and more logical way for any government to achieve the goal Playboy was suggesting instead of devaluating Rial and causing panic and instability.

No it was in response to the IR supporter who thinks everything in IR is planned and based on reason.

i believe most iranians have no idea about economics.so i think the
top moola was right when he famously said 'economy is for donkeys'.
basically greed is the only economic notion that's familiar to iranians.
all they see is the surface and material for jokes but there is more to it
and the few who understand it back there must be making a killing.

if you think iran's rial and economy has it bad then compare it to argentina's
pesos and economy.a $ would get you 10 pesos in 2015.now it has doubled
and will get you 20 pesos.which is very comparable to $ vs rial in the same time
period.but take a look at the inflation rate for the poor argentinians who are not
under any sanctions at all and you make the call.

Go ahead and compare the Islamic Japan with a country half the population with only agricultural exports. Now that we are at it Argentina's GDP per capita is more than twice of Islamic Japan.

It doesn't need to have PhD in economics to figure out that a country that depends on import in every aspect, dollar fluctuation will have immense effect on the inflation.

How the hell do you claim to understand economy and then go right into comparing Iran and Argentina?!! How are the two economies similar in any way for their inflation or currency to be compared?
