Turkey Turns to Gulf Ally Again With $15 Billion Qatar Swap Line

Turkey secured a fresh source of foreign exchange from Qatar, leaning again on the gas-rich Gulf nation that’s consistently come to the rescue as part of an alliance born after a coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish and Qatari central banks are tripling the limit of their existing swap deal to $15 billion to facilitate “bilateral trade in respective local currencies and to support the financial stability of the two countries,” according to a statement Wednesday. The lira briefly swung to a gain after the announcement, before erasing its advance to edge lower against the dollar.

The deal highlights the strength of an alliance that began to deepen after the failed 2016 coup, when Erdogan received backing from Qatar’s rulers. Turkey returned the favor a year later by siding with Qatar after it came under an economic boycott from a group of countries led by Saudi Arabia.

The strong ties led to Qatar pledging as much as $15 billion of investment and offering a credit line to backstop Turkey’s financial system at the height of its currency crisis in 2018. Meanwhile, Turkey has stationed troops and steadily built up a base in Qatar since 2017.

U$D = 18,000 Toman

The government has just eliminated the subsidizing of imported rice. Rice is now being imported at NIMA prices with 500,000 tons of it stuck at the ports because importers can't pay for them (no dollars being given to them)

Expect a rise in rice prices and potentially civil unrest. It's coming.

What I.R stands for won't be gone anytime soon (or ever). There's a reason it exists and survives. Those reasons are as fresh as they've ever been.

IRI doesn't just stand for Islamic Republic of Iran. It's also a synonym for "thoroughly corrupted to the core". The acronym might change, but the meaning won't.

Iran has very little debt in foreign currencies.

Technically it can not be considered bankrupt because it can basically inflate its way out of domestic RIAL obilgations.

Only countries like Cuba and somewhat North Korea are able to sustainably devalue their currency into oblivion (hunger). That's because they have almost full control over foreign trade, money movement and information flow. Iran is technically an open-border trade-zone that cannot be centrally controlled. Iran has never had only one currency. US dollar, Kuwaiti Dinar, UAE Dirham, Turkish Lira, Afghani and Pakistani Rupi have been viable currencies in many parts of Iran for decades and Iranians hold large sums of them.

- Iranians trade with neighboring countries regardless of legality. This means foreign trade is uncontrollable.
- Iranians routinely travel to foreign countries in large numbers. This means money movement is uncontrollable.
- Iranians, despite hardships, can easily access up-to-date information regarding anything. This means information-flow is uncontrollable.

Iran is destined to become a much poorer country than it is with a massive divide between the haves and have-nots (even larger divide than today). Civil unrest and frequent periods of disintegration is in Iran's future. That much is clear.

I don't have a crystal ball.
Iran's economy depends on all types of factors.

the Region (what happens between Pakistan and India and China).
Iran's own political stability or lack there of.
weather
energy prices.

if the current governing regime in Iran can survive for another 10 years, one can argue the economic outlook might improve at a good clip after that.
presumption: a mega deal has been reached with west, china and ... about iran's role as regional power.

If the government falls apart. you will have chaos for a minimum of 10 years. There will likely be 20 years of instability due to possible efforts to balkanize the country.

If Khamenie dies in say three years then things will probably get much worse for about 2 years till the new establishment can put away their competing factions.

the so called games theories variables start getting out of hand.

One cannot imagine anything very good for next 5 years.
energy prices will be low
relations with west will remain constrained.

Poverty in Iran has reached unprecedented levels and as I repeatedly stated in this thread, this is only the beginning. Just read the comments below the article and you'll see how even though the official numbers sound terrible, they're still only a fraction of the real devastation:

https://www.iranjib.ir/shownews/72429/خط-فقر-در-تهران-ظرف-2-سال-از-2.5-به-4.5-میلیون-تومان-رسید/

براساس بررسی‌های مرکز پژوهش‌های مجلس، خط فقر خانوارهای چهار نفره در شهر تهران ظرف 2 سال اخیر، از 2.5 میلیون تومان به 4.5 میلیون تومان رسید یعنی 80 درصد افزایش یافت

1 Dollar is now nearly 20000 goozman.

Those "isolated" Americans are really fucked now :D
Meanwhile, the new Iranian parliament has come up with the following 3 items since they started work 2 months ago:

5. Further restricting social media because regime hierarchy are disrespected
6. Arresting women who ride motorbikes

Other than these there is a lot of freedom in IR :D
