looks like iran did some creative financing to get the airbus
deal done before the new u.s. president takes office.

Iran has reached a deal with a foreign leasing company to finance the first 17 jets it plans to buy from Airbus (AIR.PA), breaking a logjam in efforts to import aircraft following the lifting of sanctions, people familiar with the move said.

The deal removes a significant hurdle to securing the first tranche of jets, following uncertainty over financing and political opposition in the United States and Iran, though the sources caution months of talking have thrown up new potential hurdles.
Iranian officials declined to name the lessor involved, but industry sources said in September that Iran was in advanced talks with the United Arab Emirates' Dubai Aerospace about helping to finance the purchase.
"We have a deal to finance the first 17 aircraft," a senior Iranian official told Reuters, without elaborating.
Dubai Aerospace and Airbus both declined to comment.

Under the deal, the leasing company would take over part of Iran's order for dozens of new jetliners and then lease them to the country's flag carrier.

There were US senators from the same county where Boeing is located, arguing against Iran buying from Boeing. Kaseye daghtar az ash. They were literally willing to lose jobs for their own constituents and corporate sponsors in order to have a sleazy lobbying job afterward.

yes but they were all against trump.
trump will spit directly in the face of all congress
and allow boeing to sell planes to iran.remember even
the vast majority of republicans in the congress refused
to endorse him and were actually against him.so he does
not owe them a thing.but he does owe the american workers
who voted for him and his promise about jobs.

boeing and iran signed a deal for 80 planes worth $16b today.
trump is sending the right signals to iran.from nominating an
oil man as secretary of state to this deal the message is clear.
the pivot towards iran started under obama will continue under
the new trump administration.the aiapc and saudi lobby and their
slaves in the congress can go suck an egg as far as trump is
concerned.

You forgot the "oil man" will have John Bolton managing the day to day affairs. Don't be too happy for your beloved IR.

This Whole plane acquisition story has turned into one great boone doggle.

Iran should have focused on super small planes (RJs) for domestic use. a few (10-40) leased single isle aircraft like A320 or 737 for flights to neighboring countries like Dubai, Baghdad, Ankara, Istanbul, Baku, Kabul, New Dehli, Malysia, Beirut.

They should focus on building up the airports. (decoupling military bases from airports). if they do that foreign airlines will just like today fly into Iran. a plane is simply a liability to operate. you should be in the business of operating reliable airports. not buying planes.

I rather ride on new planes and arrive at shitty airports than ride on shitty planes and and arrive at the state of the art airport ,makes sense ,no ?:)

But I do agree with having decent airports too but flying with a safe and sound planes is much more sensible than having top notch airports.

you do ride on new planes! you fly turkish, Qatar, Azarbayejan, Emirates, Austrian, Luftansa, BA into Iran. There is no strategic value in owning airlines.

Think about it!!! what is the strategic value? building good roads? or owning am massive taxi operating company?
What is more valuable? owning the rail lines? or owning the locomotives that run on top of it?

It is about of chicken and egg. but Iran already has all these airlines flying into Iran. there is no reason to lock so much capital around a acquiring planes.

some people say oh well yes airlines are just a glorified tax but they do create jobs. well then create the environment such that foreign company would use iran as their repair facility.
or for their cargo. rather than spending all these $ to buy so many planes.

think about it between 2008- and 2013 Iran suffered from the highest point of isolation. and even then there was plenty of foreign airlines flying into iran. so what is the whole deal about insisting about owning your own airline?

The idea of Iran (a broke country with serious money issues) spending upwards of $100 Billion to acquire a bunch of airplanes is the most ridiculous scandal in recent history of that country.
I don't think the IRI will ever buy 100+ planes even if they had the money which they don't. They signed these deals with Boeing And Airbus knowing it would fail. If these bastards cared about improving the qualify of transportation than Iranians wouldn't be riding old unsafe trains and cars. Iran's rail and auto sector have not been sanctioned like its aviation industry and yet Iran has some of the worlds most dangerous roads, cars and trains.

the self hating 3rd world mentality exhibited by most iranians
in exile is not abnormal.it is actually normal for new refugees and
immigrants to show the deep scars, more like ptsd, that life as a second
class citizen leaves on their psychological health after their initial stay
in th ehost country runs off.this becomes acute when the newly arrived
folks are of means and education and were in positions of power in their
homeland.it takes a generation or two for a healthy outlook to emerge
withing these communities.

You make sense and maybe in this day and age it won't make good business sense to invest so much money buying planes but our situation is kind of unique for being one of the very few if not the only one with such an old fleet of planes that soon if this deals don't go through they should call Iran air "so long suckers air " ....

Lets face it if they don't spend the money buying thses planes that money will end up where those 800 billion ended up during A.N period .

I would have rathered Iran to simplay buy a a bunch of A320s
some turbo-props like the ones ATR is some to deliver which is useful for super small airports.

and then many many regional jets (the planes smaller than A320 or 737 by at least 50-80 capacity).

by the way the entire delivery schedule seems to be totally political. Iran likely paid a bit more to ensure Rouhani gets his new plane arrival optics before he announces for reelection.

Even with that sort of order, there would be lots of people complaining and criticizing! One very usual comment would be, look what we had before the revolution and what we have now! How much we have sunk, etc. etc.

I'm just happy we're finally getting new planes so trips can be both cheap and safe!

As for the political delivery time point, it may very well be true. The official reason as I hear however is that they were originally built for another company but they either cancelled or reduced their order. So they went ahead and finished them for Iranair instead.

A321 is a very reasonable plane. I wonder options they elected to go with.

Iran can actually get away with having no wide body planes and stick to A320x 737x line of planes.

the range is enough to fly all the way from Tehran to most neighboring countries capitals. (exception of moscow,Dehli)
