Aziz, a few points
this preliminary convention has not yet even been ratified by majles.
50% discussion is just a misnomer launched by lazy iranian media domestic and abroad. the word 50% does not exist anywhere.
In my book, if Iran achieves 15% shoreline share it has basically gotten the best deal ever possible. if Iran gets below 12% it is a deal that will likely not get ratified in majles.
aside from that, what could have been more beneficial to iran would have been a ban on pipelines through the caspian sea, such that Turkamanistan or Azerbayjan would have been forced to transfer pipelines through iran's Territory. to Europe and or chinese markets.
in the end of the day, Iran could only stall matters. 15 years ago iran did try to exert military muscle against republic of Azarbayejan, but in the long run that is not a viable option because Turkey and the U.S would probably get introduced into the matter.
at the end of the day the current discovered resources lie much closer to Azerbayejan and Turkamnistan and Kazakistan shores. so there is not much you can do about that. Iran can benefit in the long run by having good relation cordial relations with these countries. just a few being
. electricity swaps on the border
. natrual gas swaps on the border
. transport of good to those countries from iran's warm wate ports
. better integration with
one belt one road
. open transport of industrial and agricalture goods by locals living on the border.
none of these cooperations are possible if you have a major territorial dispute with those countries.
on the 50% misnomer.
Persiangulf is an open sea and thus different internationa norms apply. but for the moment let's assume we are talking about persian gulf.
would it be legally feasible for Kuwait to come and claim that they should have equal footing with Iran/Saudi UAE
even though their coast line is fraction of those other above mentioned countries.
