[h=1]Iran’s Olympic leader says his athletes will face Israelis after previous withdrawals

LONDON — Iranian athletes will compete against Israelis at the London Olympics, according to the country’s chef de mission.
Iran has been criticized in the past because some of its athletes withdrew from events against Israelis at the 2004 Athens Games and 2008 Beijing Games.

“We will be truthful to sport,” said Bahram Afsharzadeh, who is also the secretary general of the Iranian Olympic committee said.
Afsharzadeh, who was at times speaking through a translator, also said his team had no plans to boycott events because of the nationality of opponents.
“We just follow the sportsmanship and play every country,” Afsharzadeh said.
Afsharzadeh spoke in the athletes village after signing the “truce wall,” a U.N.-backed initiative calling on warring parties around the world to end hostilities during the period of the games.
“In sport and in Olympics, all the countries must (be) together with the teams in friendship,” Afsharzadeh said in English. “Solidarity for all the countries is very important.”
Afsharzadeh also said Iran would “respect” a minute of silence if it was held in the opening ceremony to remember the 11 Israelis murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The International Olympic Committee, though, is currently rebuffing Israel’s plea for the commemoration.
“This case is for the IOC,” Afsharzadeh said. “Everything from the IOC we respect.”
Iran has 54 athletes in Britain for the games.
Outside the Olympics, Iran is involved in an ongoing standoff with Israel over the country’s nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at producing an atomic weapon. Iran denies the charge, insisting the program is for peaceful purposes only.
In 2011, Britain cut ties with Iran and closed its embassy in Tehran after militant Iranian students stormed the mission.
Despite the bitter relations between Iran and Britain, Afsharzadeh said: “Everything about the country (Britain) is very, very fantastic and everything is really normal.”

They are lying so that if they pull out they blame illness or something else and they can refer to this statement.

I think Zob Ahan is right, but I certainly hope they don't refuse to compete against any Israeli, considering most of them usually get knocked out easily in the next round anyways!

Apparently no Israeli wrestler (Free-Style or Greco-Roman) or Taekwondo athlete (Men or Women) qualified for London Olympics.so Iran's Wrestling & Taekwondo athletes are safe and can stay healthy.:)

I guess this is the first time an IRI representative has indicated Iranian athletes will compete against Israeli’s athletes. It is good step and the truth will or should come out if our athletes are forced not to compete.

Good wishes to all athletes in particular Iranian athletes.:Iran1:

You won't see a Iranian athlete compete against an Israeli as long as the IRI is in power . This guy made this statement because Iran has been warned all of its athlete can be disqualified if they don't compete so they only made this statement just in case this happens they can use this statement to make a case . If you guys havn't heard Iranian judo champion Javad Mahjoub has stayed in Iran because of having a "stomach infection" but the real reason is because he had a remote chance of facing an Israeli so they didn't want to take a risk and made him stay home . Also , the IRI media has already rebuffed thus guys statement a d called a Zionist conspiracy . P

And we should all buy that! They have already fazed out athletes that might meet israelis athletes by means of sickness or withdrawl from the games. You simply can't get little bid pragnant? Same with the Nazis in Iran.

Absolute embracement, I am so pissed off why would they even send athletes to the Olympics as I am watching the opening ceremonies, the guy was saying already an Iranian Athlete has pulled out due to injury but possibly due to the fact that he would of face an Isreali.Well how ironic that the only Iranian who might of gone against an Isreali pulled out yesterday.

Its funny how majority of Arab states have zero respect of Iran and Persian, But our poor uneducated government heads will give them BJ's to an arab stated anytime.

sports ,olympics is about friendship amongst the nation and sportmankind attitude . iran's representitives should face and challenge the nation's of isreal represntitives .
all the people in the world aside of their goverment's differences are people and came from a father and mother .s however pirit of olympics about bringing the nations to gether .sometimes even sports and fairplay in sports challenge help the govermente to perssude their nations and solve the differences .
unfortunately what we have heard the only iran's representitives in present summer game is backing off the competing and challenging .in that regard already people called iran's athletes a coward .
as long as we know wining or losing is part of game .and irani should never trun down the compete .

I think it is all about the official statement. Even if they don't compete, they already said they would have. There is not the familiar rhethoric anymore about poor palestinians and that Iran doesn't recognize "the occupying regime in Quds". It is a huge shift.

This is not about political or friendship. This is about a religion and there is no friendship in it.
