88-51 is a good and respectful result?
When we lose 81-65 against Brazil and 75-54 against Croatia, then 88-51 against the US is actually a very good result.

I'm proud of the boys to get a respectful result against the US. Dameshoon garm!

Look at the US squad. They are no where close to having their best team in these competitions. And if you look at the box score you would see that they played their starters and bench equally for this game while Iran was mostly relying on their starters.

Losing by 37 points is bad enough especially when the other side is not even fielding their best team or trying to run up the score.

I do not really see how this was a good result, nor do I know what a bad result for you would have been.

LOL at those who think this is a good result. Jaleb ine vaghti soccer mire world cup mibazim hame mikhan morabi avaz beshe ya folan bazikon retired beshe but when our basketball team goes to the world cup games va ma si ta chehel ta mikhkorim bad migin good result!

Man nemidonam bad result gharar bood chi bashe? :)
Its your ignorance and Lack of knowledge that you compare our basketball with our football... I am pretty sure you know nothing about our basketball!!! Nothing! Z E R O .... No clue...lol (u might just heard Hadadi plays in Memphis)
I've played against or with alot of these players...
All in all, Proud of them... it was a history in my eyes see them play against US . Yes, we lost 9 free throws, lost lot of posetions, Offense was weak some points specially 4th Q ...but Arsalan owned Odom in one spot, Hadadi was a Monster in some points...Again IF and only if we had Samad and Afagh, this tournoment would be whole different story!

first of all i am proud of them, secondly of all this is our first time in the big leagues against the best, look at all the teams that are not in the tournament and are watching the game from home
thirdly, if i had asked you 10 years ago that we would have a player in NBA and TM playing against the US in the world cup you would have laughed at me and would have called me crazy!!!
lets take it as it is, we witnessed the growth of our basketball today, and after today and after this tournament those players will not look at basketball the same, this will only help basketball grow in iran, and hopefully in a short 2 years we could see this team in the 2012 london olympic again!!! more mature, more experienced and ready to give teams a run for their money!!!

beside, this is history in the making, maybe you are not realizing it!!!

I am glad that we made it to the world cup. It will help this team in the long run. But I do not see how losing by 37 points is respectable or good results.

Lets not mix those things together. I am surprised that we are not doing better in Basketball.

Unlike football you do not need a whole lot of facilities to play the game. Maybe it is just that not too many kids play it.

I don't know what is more amazing:

how far our volleyball and basketball improved, or

how far our football, wrestling and weightlifting have fallen
Our Basketball used to be 9th in Asia, and we had 90-50 losses to teams like Malaysia. Although US did not push for it, result of today shows a lot of progress that must be appreciated.
As you said the same applies to volleyball.

It would of been much closer if we had our two other best players. We could of won one of the two first games IMO. A 2-2 record might of gotten us to the second round. Good showing for the boys in the first World Championships. Hopefully the next one will be much better.

I agree, looking at where our basketball was to where it is now is simply amazing, I'm so proud of these boys!

If you were to compare this to football it would be if we lost to Brazil by a 4-2 score, in my opinion that's more than a respectable result. The team played well especially in the first quarter.

We are clearly missing Nik-Kha.

The final result is roughly what I expected it to be before the match.

Doesn't matter that USA don't have their big NBA stars. Their second/third string players are still 30 points or so better than Iran's who to this date didn't even register on the world basketball counter.

Becoming good or competetive in a sport is a process. It takes time. If we can produce players and take part in international tournaments we can improve and in 20 years time lose by somewhere between 10-20 points to the USA and start talking about beating the likes of Slovenja.

It is amazing how much this team has improved, I mean from what we used to becoming back to back Asian Champions, as well as winning youth titles in Asia in Basketball.

This team is clearly missing 2 of its key players, i mean we would in my opinion been able to snatch 1 more victory so far if we had Afagh and Bahrami, possibly against Croatia or Brazil. And certainly made the margin against the US much smaller. This is just for the experience and this will help us to protect our Asian title and come back to the International stage much stronger.

This is a great team, Haddadi and Kazemi are both quality players, i mean Kazemi is proving to be quite the upcoming star. Haddadi is having a enormous tournament and is showing what a quality player he really is.

But, its still very sad to say, what could of been if we had Bahrami and Afagh we certainly would of made a push to qualify from our group.

they made it to the WC, and that fact alone is enough for me to be proud of these guys. a few more play grounds, a little more interest and of course some time to get it going (say 50 years for our standards), we could challenge most of these teams..

Members of the U.S. and Iranian men's national basketball teams have congratulated each other following a lopsided U.S. victory at the FIBA world championships in Turkey.

U.S. and Iranian national basketball players congratulate each other following their game at FIBA's world championships in Istanbul on September 1.
The 88-51 U.S. win was the first-ever match between the Iranian and U.S. teams.

The tournament marks Iran's first trip to basketball's world championships.

Fans promoting peace between Iran and U.S.
Players and coaches on both sides downplayed the political tensions between the U.S. and Iranian governments, saying the focus was on basketball competition and that the players respected each others' abilities.

"From my side and Iranian side they are, we are prepared for a sports game, you know," Iran's Serbian coach, Veselin Matic, said. "But everybody [outside] the sports they are looking like Iranian atom bomb or American policy on Iran. But we are looking differently. We are looking that we are coming to the world championships. We are really impressed that we are here."

American basketball forward Lamar Odom, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA), also stressed that off-court differences remain just that in such a contest.

"That's the beautiful thing about sports," Odom said. "You think about the history of sports -- it takes people from different cultures, different beliefs, and brings them together. Sports is the one thing that can kind of bring people together to have a great atmosphere. It was great just to play in a game like this."

Iranian center Hamed Haddadi, who plays for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, led all scorers in the game with 19 points.

Btw, what are you guys talking about with all this Wrestling catch up?
I think people forget we won the 2010 Greco-Roman World Cup, we are still one of the strongest in the World, and we proved that by winning the 2010 World Cup for the 1st time in our history. Its a sport that makes us proud on the International level over and over again.
I can answer this one.

look at our performance in the olympics and the world championships, the top competition in wrestling. Our performance has been disastrous. There was time where we could count on at least one gold medal from our freestyle wrestlers, 2-3 additional medals from our freestyle team, and our GR team would surprise us with one or two medals
