Is this the first sign of military rule.

This guy is not even a Pasdar. He was trained as a vet.
His official rank is "Salashkar-e Bassiji", not "Sarlashkar-e Pasdar", because he was not a member of Sepah during the war. His appointment as armed force chief was the most ridiculous appointment of Khamenei (along with his own appointment as leader, of course).

How could Sepah commanders with real war experience accept this? They're not that powerless.

very good points BT jaan but if IRGC is united on this what can the people, or the opposition do?

I can only think of Artesh (if they have the capability) taking the oppositions side and staging a counter coup or for Sepah to be split and stage a counter coup. This is very simplistic and one needs a lot of knowledge to comment on. Its certainly beyond my scope.
Abedzaadeh jAn,
IRGC has entire regular armed forces under its command. Army, Air Force and Navy all have IRGC sardars as commanders.
Even if they were independent they probably would opt to remain neutral like they have done it in the past.

Soroush jAn,
He holds the position for Joint Chief of Staff and military adviser for khananehei.
The dumber the person in that position the easier for IRGC to deal with him.
He is in a position capable of objecting to numerous No-Bid Contracts awarded to IRGC but so far he has not even risen his voice. With those fat vocal cords he probably doesn't have any voice.:D
Also he has started from basij who can't be counted as a member of IRGC inner circle.

agha motori, tha was funny .however this ghoch-ali is just another product of a cowrd regime .
Payan jAn,
No one gives serious taught to a fat general.
This guy reminds me of Idi Amin Dada, but at least Idi used to dress like a general with all the bells and whistles hanging from his uniform.
This guy with that chafyeh, those "darb o daaghoon" pens in his sleeve pocket and hanging glesses look more like a "doaa' nevees" or even a "Jigarakee". :D

Motori jan so are you implying that he is not one of the coup's main instigators?

Abedzadeh jAn,
It depends which coup we are talking about.
If we are pointing at the 2005 and the one was planed recently, then yes he was part of the operations and may be planing too.
But talking about the major coup which I'm thinking it will be orchestrated by IRGC after the demise of Seyyed Ali Shah, then no. He will actually be among the victims to be dumped in the drain.
For now he is enjoying the Alishah's blessing.
