Have you tried using reversing rings?
the thing is that I already have a pretty sweet macro lens this is basically just for fun. seeing what I can do like this.

i had a adaptor for my old Helio lens which made for mouting screw mont lenses on EOS bodies so i just thought of making a good use out of it , but yea backwards mounting is pretty cool .

Look at the reviews on CNET.com. Search Canon PowerShot S3 IS. Overall it has been rated about 7.5/10

And go to pbase.com and search the Camera's name and you will be able to look at samples people have taken with this camera!

S3 1S is crap. you need sth which you are able to change the lens and practice.

If you you are new to photography and want to learn deeply forget digital and start with manual 35mm SLR but it gonna cost you a fortune and film processing is pricy too.

digital SLR is the other option but tell us whats ur budget first.
meantime enjoy http://www.steves-digicams.com/

As Alila said what is your budget.
May I ask why and how you got interested in photography?
If you just want to try a new hobby and are not sure if you are going to continue buy the camera you mentioned. But if you are even slightly serious buy a digital SLR. Now days they are dirt cheap.
