Mercedes Benz drives into Iran’s market

TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (MNA) – German heavy weight car manufacturing company, Dymler Chrysler, will start producing Mercedes Benz passenger cars in Iran as of February 6, 2005 under a contract that would give an equal share to each side of German and Iranian, ISNA reported yesterday.

Mercedes Benz will be the second foreign car manufacturer (Iran Mercedes Benz Co.) after the French Renault (Pars Renault Co.) that has a joint venture with Iranian car makers.

The German director of the Iran Mercedes Benz Co. will be Kurtz.

Based on the contract, the cars will be imported on a CBU basis but they will be assembled inside Iran on a step-by-step basis. The target users will be governmental organizations mainly and the price of the products might be fixed around 800,000,000 rials each, the report read.

As agreed between the two sides, the cars will be operated by gas-fueled engines.

The German company plans to have another joint venture with Iran for the after sale services too. This contract will give a 49 percent share to the Iranian side.

According to the initial contract, the products were supposed to be manufactured in Iran; however, it was changed to a full CKD contract due to the opposition of the American partner of the Dymler Chrysler Co.

Contracts like this are to the benefits of both side. It is cheaper to pay the workers
in Iran than it was if things were produced in Germany. Taxes are lower and so on.
On the countrary Iran needs to do something about unemployment.

assembling cars in Iran is just a way to slip through the heavy
government tariffs of 130% from march this year!

Thats why peugeot, renault, nissan, citroen already assemble cars in
iran through iranian companies such as Saipa, Iran Khodro, Bahman, Pars
Khodro etc etc.

PS. Merccedes cars are already assembled in Iran..the A-class passenger
cars and Mercedes buses and trucks...all are the latest models...
they are assemled by Iran Khodro.

Still some people get jobs. It would have been worse if they couldn't get projects like this.

i understand what you mean saeedb , but my point is There are no tariffs if the car is made in the country. Why do you think more and more car makers hire iranian companies to assemble their cars inside Iran??
For ex the notorious Peugeot 206, you see thousands of these cars
in Iran, because they are manufactured by Iran Khodro in the country.

The article above is either BS...or the damn germans have a plan. It
could be that they know that if a Iranian goes to UAE or Germany to buy
a Benz and import it into Iran it will cost him today around 100 000 euros
if its the E-class.
So they open instead show-rooms in Iran and sell the same cars for the
same damn high price, but whats attractive is that the customers can forget
about the hassle of going to anpther country and bringing back the car....
but this was just a theory and I doubt it! hehe

BMW Enters Iran as First Automotive Retailer in a Decade
by Trevor Hofmann / American Auto Press

BMW Iran Has Aspirations of 2,000 to 3,000 Sales per Month

Which Middle Eastern country got the better deal? Not long ago Iraq got its
first new car dealership in decades, a Hyundai retail outlet right in the
center of Baghdad. Neighboring Iran has just received its first dealership
after about 10 years, and the automaker to chance investing in an unstable
market is not Hyundai, but at the other end of the economic scale BMW.

years. (Photo: Shawn Pisio, American Auto Press)
"Following painstaking procedures, we obtained permits to import our cars,
and a few have made it through customs," commented BMW Iran's Sean Arjmand
to a Reuters reporter.

Not necessarily about to affect BMW's overall sales, a total of two midsize
5-Series models were successfully imported, selling for about E120,000, just
less than three times German retail due to tariffs which start at 130
percent. Eight additional BMWs were still held up in customs in the southern
port of Bandar Abbas, according to the Reuters report of August 26.

Obviously BMW hopes for many more exports than 10 cars. Reuters reported BMW
has aspirations of selling between 2,000 to 3,000 cars per year in the
future, a goal that would need less stringent customs procedures in order to
be realized.

Arjmand added, "We have to go all the way first and the procedures must be
clarified to us before we import more cars."

Prior to the BMW dealership opening, wealthy Iranians purchased cars outside
of Iran and by so doing were hit with tariffs of approximately 200 percent.

Arjmand has visions of chaging the past, stating, "Our ultimate goal is to
assemble BMWs in Iran, but we would like to take one step at a time."
