The corporate America and people who run the country don't care at all about America and Americans and only care about money, so that is when you are wrong ...
They have already exported all the jobs to other countries while American middle class family is getting worst every year. Yet they set the US flag and sing "God bless America"

All these things about patriotism is meaningless in my opinion. People in society want to maximize their own benefits. The only thing that prevent them not to abuse the society is the law and competition. Countries like US, Canada and ... have good laws that prevent the people of doing certain things but humans are humans.

I agree with Carlin one can be proud of one's achievement(s) and not for something that he had nothing to do with. Having said I do not have a problem with Patriotism or nationalism as long as it means loving and caring for your motherland and culture. The problem is when Nationalism is interpreted to mean feeling of racism and/or superiority over nations.

Even that is tolerable to a certain extent (and natural). It's physical and economical aggression that becomes a real problem.

Swiss people are known to be racist and dismissive of other cultures, but seldom the aggressor as a nation.

The corporations do care about the Nationalism when they do need to control the sheep, like creating fear and nationalism to serve in the army, or fear to push their agenda. In another words, only when it serves their pocket.

Why do you need a substitute?
I have not studied social science - but If you open your eyes and look - you will see all humans do - in one way or another........but when it comes to nationalism...it even goes a step beyond any "ism" - it's the natural human and even animal sense of protecting ones home and living environment. It's the natural social human bonding between neigbors, hometowners, etc....

Nationalism worked in prior period before Internet. Times are changing and that is one issue when you try to get people to die for changing a regime such as that of Iran. There is internet and so much to look forward to, that is a big difference than 1970s. That is why Iran is stuck in such a bad time trying to get rid of the disease that is the Islamic republic.

I dont think the idea of Nationalism makes much sense among the young and future generations anymore. For Iran, the best thing it could do is to try to figure out on how to export and become part of globalization. But unfortunately, Islamic republic keeps having it go the other way back into ancient time. That is the problem with the Islam that like a disease Iranians are stuck with. No one except the poor backward Islamic countries want this disease and you cant sell it to them and make money as they are already nfected by this disease. So, Iran is stuck in a bad place until they find a cure to this disease which once grabs you will kill you if you try to give it up.

I disagree. The nationalism is not a natural human phenonema but rather man made. The only reason the humans try to protect the home and living environment and bond together with groups is due to it beneficial to them. And they are willing to go further than protection and attack the others to have a bigger home and more power. It is not the way of the universe but rather the way of low minded humans. And those humans that are able to enlighten understand that.

That is why you have a very small group who wants all the money and bigger homes and says F** You to anyone who tries to make sure others have the most basic such as healthcare, since it might cut into their piece of pie. In that case, nationlism is suddenly down the toilet and makes no sense. But when they need these same poor people to go to Army and protect their big homes from others, suddenly they scream nationlism and die for your country.
