'Mourinho offered £5.2m Blues deal'
Chelsea appear ready to challenge the depth of Jose Mourinho's dissatisfaction with the club's hierarchy by reportedly offering to up his pay by £1million a year. Mourinho is unhappy with the level of support he received from Chelsea following his UEFA touchline ban according to assistant Baltemar Brito.
However, his agent, Jorge Mendes, has revealed that Chelsea have thrown a £5.2million-a-year three-year extension on to the table after club owner Roman Abramovich flew to London to join the contract talks.
Mendes told the London Evening Standard: 'The negotiations are going well and nearing an end. It will be concluded very soon, maybe even on Thursday.'
The offer of a new contract had been planned for the summer but the UEFA controversy, sparked by Mourinho's criticism of Swedish referee Anders Frisk following the Champions League match at Barcelona's Nou Camp, has prompted more urgent action.
The deal, an improvement on the #4.2million-a-year deal he signed last summer, will make him the highest-paid manager in English football, substantially ahead of England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and Premiership rivals Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson.
Mourinho will not be at Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge tonight as he serves the first match of a two-game touchline ban imposed following his controversial comments after the away tie against Barcelona in the last round.
He has hogged more than his fair share of the headlines since arriving in England, having already attracted a charge of improper conduct from the FA for comments about Manchester United and with the consequences of his meeting with Arsenal defender Ashley Cole still unknown.
Brito yesterday made clear the Portuguese boss, who has already taken the Blues to Carling Cup success and is closing in on the Barclays Premiership title, felt isolated and annoyed at the club's failure to appeal the ban.
