More than 25,000 people are killed in road accidents every year, the former director of center for emergency medical services said on Sunday.
Describing road crashes as the main cause of trauma in Iran, Farzad Panahi said that the trauma is the leading cause of death and injury in the country.
In the past, an average number of 37,000 persons died of road crashes yearly, he added.
Iran’s road fatality rate increased by 17% over the years 1385-86, the former director averred.
Referring to drastic measures taken to reduce the number over the past years, he said this year, which ends on March 20, the death toll has been reduced by more than 10% in comparison to the past year.
Panahi cited road safety, effective cooperation between police, Red Crescent Society, and the forensic emergency medical services as among the reasons behind decrease in traffic accidents over the past years.
He also said that compared with certain Asian countries, Iran’s center for emergency medical services provide the best medication.
Response time -- when the emergency response vehicle arrives at the scene of the incident -- in developed countries are within 5-8 minutes, and in Iran the time is within 15 minutes, Panahi added.
