Ranieri takes over as Monaco coach

The 60-year-old former Chelsea, Juventus, Roma and Internazionale coach has signed a two-year deal and takes over from compatriot Marco Simone.

He will be formally unveiled at a press conference on Thursday, the Monegasque team confirmed on their website.

"We are convinced," they said, "that under the direction of Ranieri the team will continue on their good run of form in the second half of last season, during which they improved considerably. We think above all that the training techniques of Ranieri will bring another level to the preparation of the team, and will allow for a new level of performance to satisfy the supporters."

Ranieri had been out of work since being fired by Inter in March.

He had been linked with a return to England with West Bromwich Albion, who are looking to replace Roy Hodgson.

Monaco, the runners-up in the 2004 Champions League final, slipped into France's second tier a year ago, and could only finish eighth in their first season in Ligue 2.

He is not good enough for second devision team in France?
He is not such a bad coach as you think he is, he is just not good enough to be Juve or Inter coach but he had been doing good with small teams specially in building up projects. But yeah he never was good enough for Chelsea nor Juve and Inter but he did good at Fiorentina, Parma, Roma and Valencia we'll see about Monoco as well.

The majority of the problems was Inter's transfer market like selling Motta, resources were'nt that great. Morratti was in fault mostly but Ranieri was also very poor to handle the situation. He is good enough for Monoco though, it wont be easy but the big team like Monoco should be able to get back to the top.

He is a superb coach. I think he should have returned to the Premier League with Villa/Chelsea/Liverpool but I feel that due to his lack of success in Italy, he feels he deserves to be in the French second division. If you remember, Monaco knocked out his Chelsea side out of the Champions League all those years ago! I reckon with this appointment, he will send Monaco back to the first division. Besides, he has the Monte Carlo lifestyle now ;)

His time in Italy has sparked problems with the Serie A. The EPL, most managers get the sufficient amount of opportunities like Steve Kean at Blackburn. They need to recognise that football is too unpredictable for them to sack managers on a monthly basis.

No. When with all the resources you can't do much in big clubs then forget about second division .

don't forget, bringing back a team to the top league is not easier than winning a champions league .....
duuuh..it's french second division and they are loaded with cash. come on man, seriously....don't be ridiculous

The worst is when he is behind and he substitutes a forward with a forward or something so conservative.

Having said that, he is not a bad coach but very conservative.

Greece have sacked coach Claudio Ranieri following Friday's embarrassing 1-0 home defeat against the Faroe Islands.

The Italian signed a two-year deal to replace Fernando Santos in July, but has seen his reign ended after only four months in charge.

Ranieri's position had already been called into question after Euro 2016 qualifying defeats to Romania and Northern Ireland, as well aas a 1-1 draw in Finland.
And a humiliating defeat against the Faroes, ranked 187th in the world, at the Karaiskakis Stadium proved to be the final straw.

Greece Football Federation president Giorgos Sarris said in a statement released on Saturday: "Following this devastating result for the national team, I take full responsibility for the most unfortunate choice of coach, which has resulted in such a poor image of the national team being put before the fans.

"The governing board will convene and take responsibility among all the members to make the necessary changes needed to avoid a repeat of such an embarrassing night."

Greece are languishing at the bottom of Euro 2016 qualifying Group F following their shock defeat to the Faroes.

However you lost your bet!
Not only he won the ligue 2 then he finished as runner up the following season something that their new coach was not able to.
