Tehran, March 7, IRNA -- World and Olympic +105 kg weightlifting gold
medalist Hossein Rezazadeh here Monday said he is determined to break
his own records in next year`s Asian and world events.
The cherubic Iranian hercules was named "World Weightlifter of the
Year 2004" in a ceremony on the 100th anniversary of the international
federation in Istanbul, Turkey, last Thursday.
He was also included on the 12-member list of the century`s best
lifters, say, Pyros Dimas from Greece, Turkish weightlifters, Naim
Suleymanoglu and Halil Mutlu, and Russia`s Vasily Alexiev.
Rezazadeh, who talked to IRNA, expressed his pleasure over winning
the honor.
President of the International Weightlifting Federation, Tamas
Ajan, appreciated Rezazadeh in the ceremony, calling him the Olympic
record-holder and top lifter of the world.
Ajan awarded him a plaque of honor.
Iran`s weightlifting supremo Ali Moradi and secretary of the
country`s federation, Darab Riahi, were present in the ceremony.
Rezazadeh proved unrivaled as he won the Olympic gold on walkover
in Athens on August 25, 2004.
The 26-year-old, who invoked Hazrat Abolfazl (AS), a religious
leader of the Shiites, prior to his every attempt edged past all
rivals with a 210 kg lift in snatch, which was later combined with a
world record of 263.5 kg in the clean and jerk.
He improved his own record by 0.5 kg as he incredibly flung the
bar above his head in his third clean-and-jerk effort.
The beefy icon, now the two-time Olympic gold medalist and twice
world champion, was too strong for world superheavies as his total
lift, 472.5 kg, was well above the records of silver winner from
Latvia Viktors Scerbatihs and Bulgaria`s Velichko Cholakov, who bagged
bronze.
Scerbatihs totally hoisted 455 kg and Cholakov 447.5.
