Display pleases Moyes

David Moyes was pleased with his side’s second-half performance as Manchester United broke down a stubborn Swansea City side to claim a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford and a first win of 2014.

The Reds went into the game on the back of three straight defeats, including an FA Cup loss to the Swans the previous weekend, but gained revenge thanks to strikes from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck. The sides went in goalless at the break, but a tactical tweak that saw Adnan Januzaj switch to the left wing and Shinji Kagawa come inside behind Welbeck paid dividends for Moyes.

"I thought we played well, especially in the second half. We limited them to very few opportunities and got the result we deserved," the Reds boss told MUTV. “We started the game well and we made a great chance for Danny Welbeck to put us 1-0 up. Then Swansea did what they're good at and we couldn't quite get at them. We altered it a little at half-time and we were much better in the second half.

“We changed one player but I thought we had to run a bit harder than we had in the first half. I didn't think we pressed Swansea as much as I'd have liked. We needed to try and win the ball back sooner. I thought if we could do that then we could disrupt them and get more of the ball ourselves. In the end it worked."

United had chances to extend the lead further with Chris Smalling and Kagawa both going close. Moyes was pleased to see the Reds creating chances but urged the players to be more ruthless in front of goal.

“I was screaming at them to keep going forward,” he continued. “I thought if we could get that third goal it would have been great.

"I feel we have to start taking our chances and building our confidence. Once we got the first and second we were in real control but we should have added to our tally. We deserved to score more, but let's hope we're keeping them for later in the season."



Fletch praises Moyes tactics

Darren Fletcher believes David Moyes’ half-time team talk was key to Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Swansea City in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

The sides went in goalless at the break, prompting Moyes to push Adnan Januzaj to the wing and bring Shinji Kagawa inside to play in the hole behind Danny Welbeck. It had the desired result almost instantly, as Antonio Valencia opened the scoring two minutes after the restart and Welbeck got the second soon after, and Fletcher praised his manager for the decision.

"He felt we could get down the left and made a subtle change by moving Adnan out there and Shinji in behind the striker," explained the midfielder. "He also told us to raise the tempo, press a little bit quicker in their half and not let them get into their rhythm of passing the ball because they are one of the best passing teams in the league.

"We knew the right-back was on a yellow card so that [moving Januzaj to left wing] was an opportunity to get at him because he couldn’t give away too many fouls or else he would run the risk of getting a red card."

Januzaj had another excellent game as his prodigious rise continues, and Fletcher was among those impressed by the youngster, adding: "For his age, he is up there with some of the best I have seen, without a shadow of a doubt."

The Scot also enjoyed Kagawa's display, saying: "He receives the ball so well on the half-turn, he was looking to create and make things happen. He will take great confidence from that and hopefully he can keep moving forward."

Star strikers can inspire Reds

David Moyes says Wayne Rooney's partnership with Robin van Persie is central to Manchester United's UEFA Champions League chances.

The two strikers formed an impressive alliance during the 2012/13 campaign and both quickly reached double figures earlier this term, but they have barely played together over the winter due to injury. However, both men have featured in United's last five matches.

Speaking on the eve of United's first leg encounter with Olympiacos, Reds boss Moyes explained why their form is absolutely central to his hopes of European glory.

"They're both vital to a lot of the things we do," the boss told reporters during a press conference at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens. "They're both excellent players. Our record with them is far better than our record without them, that's for sure.

"Both have had injuries, Robin much longer than Wayne, and both have got themselves back into shape. They're both goalscorers and they're scoring goals, which is great for us. That's why they're top players – they score in big games and make the big moments."

My warmest welcomes to Louis van Gaal , Marcel Bout & Frans Hoek. welcome to fantastic Manchester United. :)

Marcel Bout joins United as assistant coach, specialising in opposition scouting, having previously worked for Bayern Munich, Telstar, AZ, FC Volendam and Feyenoord. he worked with Bayern Munich in last year's Treble season and left Bayern in summer.

Frans Hoek is Holland's goalkeeping coach and has been involved in the development of great goal keepers such as Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar and Barcelona's Victor Valdes. he joins Manchester United as assistant coach, specialising in goalkeeping.
