These big percentages are usually the first step to takeovers so it will be interesting if he's just testing it out or if he is going to buy the club. Seeing that Arsenal have been the most resistant club (at least publicly), it'll be interesting to see how this affects the players and management if it actually happens. In one way it's a shame that ownerships of these clubs are leaving the countries they are based in, but it might just be the modern world catching up to football. The saddest part, and this is already happening but not completely, is if football becomes less about the game and more about being a commercial tool.

Kroenke buys stake in Arsenal

DENVER (AP) -- Colorado businessman Stan Kroenke bought a 9.99 percent stake in London's Arsenal soccer team from the British television network ITV.

Kroenke, a real estate developer who owns the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche and the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer, said Thursday that he also entered into "conditional arrangements" with ITV involving the sale of ITV's 50 percent share in Arsenal Broadband Limited.

The total value of the deals would be approximately $128.1 million, Kroenke's company said in a statement.

A spokesman for Kroenke Sports Enterprises wouldn't comment on whether Kroenke would attempt to buy Arsenal outright down the road.
"It's always been our policy not to speculate on any investments," said Paul Andrews, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Kroenke Sports. "We hold pretty tight to that policy."

Kroenke Sports announced in February it had formed a marketing alliance with the Arsenal club to exchange business, commercial and marketing information, and share coaching and training philosophies.

"We really have a tremendous amount of respect for Arsenal and the way they manage their team," Andrews said.

Andrews said the marketing alliance led to Kroenke's interest in Arsenal.

"It's fair to say he was impressed with them and made this investment due to the respect he gained in that process," Andrews said.

Andrews wouldn't comment on whether the Rapids planned to change their name to Arsenal.

When the marketing alliance was announced, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted it did not mean Kroenke was buying the London team.

"(The deal) is not for a takeover," Wenger said in February. "There are enough Americans in the league now."

Kroenke, who is also a co-owner of the St. Louis Rams, is the latest American businessman to invest in a European soccer team.

Tom Hicks and George Gillette Jr. recently completed their takeover of the Liverpool soccer team. Hicks owns baseball's Texas Rangers and the NHL's Dallas Stars, and Gillette owns the NHL's Montreal Canadiens.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer controls Manchester United, and Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner took over Aston Villa this season.
The Rapids will open the MLS season Saturday against D.C. United in Dick's Sporting Goods Park, a new 18,000-seat soccer complex in the Denver area that includes 24 lighted fields and is one of the largest soccer parks in the world.

Dont worry Arsenal wont be taken over. Arsenal is a very conservative football club when it comes to these stuff(thankfully!) + the club has found its way to improve its revenue year by year, so they dont need a billionaire to take over and make them rich(& full of debt)!

what exactly is wrong with a leveraged buyout of the club? It allows the current shareholders to cash out at a lucrative premium. The buyer slaps a shitload of debt on the company and uses the cash flows to pay it down over time. I don't understand why you guys look down upon these transactions.

the only downside is that there will be limited cash flow to fund acquisitions. the upside though is it will encourage the club to grow organically, i.e. through internal youth programs and rising through club levels. the other benefit is that these buyers usually make sure they bring in solid management to run the club, which includes a better coach than wenger.

from everything i have read about this guy, i dont think he is interested in buying the club. However, when some billionaire comes in wanting to buy a club, usually they succeed so it doesnt really make a difference whether the club is liverpool, manU or arsenal.

Niloufar dont be so naive.

Money talks...If the deal is right, Arsenal will be sold. And yes they do need a billionaire to make them rich. If they want to compete with the biggest teams then they do.

Arsenal do lack one or two big signings.

Emirates was supposed to bring them the money they needed....so there was never a real talk and need about someone putting money in them.
in the short term they will be paying off for emirates, so all the money coming in will be going out. even then the real money is going to come from premiership from next season and champions league.

at the same time u got chelsea and manU who are ahead of arsenal. liverpool 's new owners have supposedly given rafa 40 million pounds to spend in the summer.

so, does arsenal want to keep up with these guys or compete for the 4th place and lose out on all the extra money which is being pumped in the premiership from next next season? of course arsenal wants to compete with these guys, but they wont be able to on their own. They have got some promising kids, but they are still inconsistent, and they wont be ready for another couple of years. There is talk of henry leaving in the summer in most the papers today. barcelona for 20 million, some even say 12 million, and lehman's future is not exactly certain either.

and on top of all this there is this issue of england having only 3 champions league clubs... i dont think it would happen, but what if it does? arsenal can simply not afford to lose their champions league spot (same goes for any of the other three, because that income is something they automatically count on).

so arsenal can certainly do with an woner with big pockets, just to keep up with the other 3. although as i said earlier, it doesnt seem as if this guy is insterested in buying arsenal right now.

On a one-off day Arsenal "can" beat any English side including the best: Man Utd or Chelsea but over the course of a season, they cant because they dont have the maturity or consistency. And in Europe Arsenal are behind other top clubs. And with this squad, although its talented, they wont make it. Doesnt need wholesale changes, just a couple of tweaks in my opinion.

Possibly a world class goalkeeper in Akinfeev. Id also bring in a top defender, either a left back or a center back (more likely the former). Then a top top winger in Ribery and finally a world class finisher, someone like Eto'o would be great.

But even in those three players, you are looking to spend something like 75-100 million Euros.

Well they definetly do need money generated into the club. Our hands were always tight when it came to Summer signings..but Arsenal will never ever become like Chelsea(that the new owner decides for the club's signings) or else Wenger will leave the club for good..
The best example is like Liverpool. They buy the club, but stay away out of the big decisions since they got no clue about it! Thats good if it happens in Arsenal.

This yr our Rev was higher, bc of Emirates and $ we got from construction building in Highbury buildings, but our players' wages were higher than our Rev, so overall we had a $12mil loss.

ur soooo right Babak, we need couple of decent world class signings. I read that Wenger is after Alves, Ribery and possibly Eto'o. but so is ManU/Liverpool & with the money they got and their CL spots, they can very well beat us in summer signings. we first have to make sure we make it to CL for next season, or else we cant even make one single decent signing for next yr..
