It is fashionable in some circles these days to pooh pooh the American culture, going so far as saying that there is no such thing anymore. Nothing special about America. Move on. Well, if you want to take a crash course in what being an American means and not what the lefty activists wish it were, watch this Cadillac commercial. Not bad. I like the arrogance, but "all the stuff" he's declaring as the reward of taking less time off are being made by Chinese workers at the expense of the same Americans who unlike their fathers don't have the luxury of "making their own luck". Success paths were all monetized, channeled and 'regulated' in the past couple of decades.

I have no doubt there was a time that hard work had a very high chance of paying off in the long run. I rode on the very last of those wonderful waves. They're gone. I just don't see it anymore. Not in America, not in China, not even in Germany. Things have changed.

And I agree that American is a state of mind, not a nationality. Unfortunately, that state of mind is no longer yielding success. Stats prove that.

As expected the naysayers are out in force. This ad is not abut China, minimum wage, income inequality or all the other nonsense. It is about not being ashamed of what you have worked for. And if you think hard work won't get you anywhere, try not working hard. And I LOVE the dig at Europe. For 6 years we are constantly lectured that Americans got it all wrong. Life is about taking 3 hour lunch breaks and afternoon naps. N'est pas?

It is all about being innovative and working hard......it's about a society that rewards both - and that is America. Is everything perfect here? hell no - we even have a bozo sellout as president with an army of idiots on his team.....but.....it is all about the foundation which is set right.

I personally am not against hard work, but also, I don't think having two week vacations is meant for human beings. According to this ad, people should drive to work for 2 hours everyday in traffic, work for 10 hours everyday, have two weeks of having vacation every year and get retired by age of 70 just be a proud American and drive a Cadillac. Screeeeeeeeeeeew that !! I know that you believe in this BS as well, we work to live not live to work, specially for bunch of billionaires. Take my advice amigo !!

Are those waves gone for every industry?

I don't who got the idea that two weeks vacation is standard in America.

if you work in service industry you typically have zero vacation and the 8-9 federally recognized holidays are not paid either.

America is fine place if you fit into top 10%.

It is a very good place if you fit into top 2%

It is fantastic place if you fit into top 1%

it is the best place on planet earth if you fit into .01%.

if you are just above the 50% Median American is a good place for you to live.

if you are in the bottom 30% America is mediocre place for you to live.

if you are below the poverty line (roughly 20K per annum) America is a miserable place for you to live.

It depends where you fit.

generally if you have lots of money and can get dividends and capital gains and live off it then this is best place on planet earth.

First of all that guy is happy with his life. Very happy. Where did you get the idea that he is not having fun. By the looks of it he is having PLENTY of fun. Besides, what are YOUR work habits and what do you teach to your children? I personally would not know what to do with my time if I took a whole month off. This we-work-to-live-not-live-to-work is a cliche. Ever thought about both? You can, you know. Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if GM got a call from the White House to pull the ad. That sort of message doesn't jive with expanding food stamps and wallowing in minimum wage. We wanna hear misery.

Really?

I agree with this. The people at the two extreme ends of this argument are quite fucked in the head, and I also agree that in recent years, there has been a surge in 'takers'. I just don't think it has anything to do with GOP vs. DEMs. It has more to do with a fixed set of people continuing to dictate the rules of life to everyone else regardless of which party is in power.

Good looking car, little low on horsepower and ridiculously expensive @ $75k! Apparently, it has tanked big time in the showroom - just over 100 sold nationwide! It's understandable too when you can buy an Audi RS5 from those 4 week vacationing Germans for less than that! ;)

It depends on how many kids you have and where you are making 80-100K

if you live in alabama with 80-100K you are gone be very comfortable.

but if you in Connecticut 80K is not gone take you very far.

I like the part where he speaks about American innovation because in modern history America had the most important innovations like electricity , automobile , airplanes . Without those innovation the world be a much different place. But there is no denying Americans work harder and take less vacations than Europeans .

What is missed in the hoopla is that this ad is even "controversial". Not long ago what he says was a given. We did not come here to be packed in another Pride in the name of saving the environment. That was the America we came for. And you know what? It still is. When all the networks, pundits, activists and politicians have signed off, this is what parents teach their children. If you are shocked to hear that, the media has gotten to you.

this is wonderful...love it!

USA is the greatest nation on earth and historically the best superpower history ever witnessed. May American supremacy reign forever! (and no...I'm not sarcastic...it is what it is...)

About America listen mate I get what you are saying and I agree but don't look at California and New York. Come to the Midwest, South or here in Alaska and you will see how the real Americans do it. Don't let Hollywood and NY be the representatives of America and there is good and bad in every culture. Yes you can say we are individualistic and materialistic(but not all of us) but you can still come to this country with next to nothing and not speak a word of English but still make it.

Isn' this what I am saying? Isn't this what this ad is saying? You are not born with an ELR in your driveway. How many French guys do you know who would pack up and move to Alaska in search of a better life, first for themselves and ultimately for everybody else?
