Well I had to play the waiting game since I moved to Anchorage in October but today I can finally get one step closer into working with the Anchorage Police Dept. I have the written test today and sometime between now and November(when the academy starts), I need to take a physical exam and that shouldn't be too hard. Anyways I already have time in the military and for once my military service will be a positive and not a negative because if you have a degree and military experience, you can rise up the ranks quickly. Everyone still needs to go through the five month academy and five months of patrol plus eighteen months of patrol by yourself but once that is done you will get promoted quickly.
Well the real reason why I am doing this as well is because hopefully in five to ten years (most likely ten), I can go to either Notre Dame law school or Pepperdine University. The idea of law enforcement always intrigued me and the area which interests me the most is the DEA or drug unit that is what they call it here in Anchorage. I don't think anything from the past should come back to bite me but I am still filling out resumes. The best part is I got used to working six 12 hr shifts in the Navy but in the Police dept you have three 12 hr shifts.
At first my mom and dad were not to happy about the idea and I can understand their concerns being that I am the only child left but they are starting to see it my way. My dad is not a young buck anymore in fact on Friday he is going to the hospital for major spinal surgery and he is 68 and my mom might be 58 but she hardly works out and my grandmother is in better physical condition than my own mom. I also don't have it made like other family members where they have sibling and young but very rich parents so God forbid if something happens to my parents, I need to be able to stand on my own two feet. The last real job I had was in the navy and that was over two years ago and since then I even got an MBA but I still have a tough time getting a job. At least the police dept is also equal opportunity so I won't be discriminated against for being a Caucasian male that happens in a lot of jobs and they say Navy is equal opportunity but it is not. Oh and I have a leg up because in the Navy you need to get gun qualified so I don't need to worry about that and I already went through boot camp so I am used to the abuse and I can do five months standing on my head(especially considering you can go home after the day is over).
Well sorry for the essay response fellas but I will keep you guys updated hopefully if everything goes well by March of next year I will be in patrol with a partner. Hopefully I don't get stuck with an incompetent partner because you can learn a lot during those first crucial five months. Actually, what you learn in your first two years of patrol will carry you over to your next field it doesn't matter if you want to be a detective or in the drug unit.
By the way this is not a joke this is really going down.
