Fifteen British Navy personnel have been captured at gunpoint by Iranian forces, the Ministry of Defence says.

The men were seized at 1030 local time when they boarded a boat in the Gulf, off the coast of Iraq, which they suspected was smuggling cars. The Royal Navy said it was doing everything it could to secure the release of the sailors and marines who are based on HMS Cornwall. They were said to be carrying out a routine patrol in Iraqi waters.

The Ministry of Defence said: "The group boarding party had completed a successful inspection of a merchant ship when they and their two boats were surrounded and escorted by Iranian vessels into Iranian territorial waters. "We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level. "The British government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."

It is understood the men being held are safe and well. Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, in an attempt to get the sailors and marines released as quickly as possible. In a statement, leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell, also called for their immediate release.
"Whatever the rights and wrongs of military action, British forces in Iraq are now there with the authority of a UN security council resolution... and the Iranian government should be left in no doubt of the serious implications of their action," he said. In 2004, Iran detained eight British servicemen for three days after they allegedly strayed over the maritime border. The UK claimed the men were "forcibly escorted" into Iranian territorial waters.

It's been a cultural misunderstanding:

English: Forcibly Escorted

Iranian: Extreme TAROF (Margeh khodam ageh bezaram beri, jooneh shoma nemishe, emshabo keh hatman mehmooneh khodami, ... all those while holding the hands of the poor guests trying to leave)

at least the eid is getting a lot of mention on the tv.

both bbc and sky have cut all their normal news programes and covering this. they keep mentioning the eid.

some are saying iran wanted the 5 irani diplomats arrested by the americans to be released in time for eid, but they were not. so they say iran will use the 15 british soldiers as a barganing tool.

When will these fuck brains realise Iran is no longer a pushover. We are dominating the region and they cannot do shit, even with their so called 'superiour' SAS and Marine camandoes with their equipment.

Iran should put these buggers on trial and imprision them. Think about it, if Iran did not capture them, the American and British would move in the waters and capture the whole thing!

We are just to unpredictable and gangsta!

Faghat Iran!

yeah saw this. very interesting ! lol! they thing this will get them less sanctions?
We have lived with the sancations all our lives. What the west do not realise is that sanctions make us work harder!

Think about it, its a known fact that Iranian workers in Iran are lazy and sleep all day (when has a shop been open without speculation?) now think how we would cope with imported stuff coming in!

Sanctions are good!

i honeslty dont know what iran think it can achieve by doing something like this.

the brits are adamant that they were inside the iraqi waters, and they say there was even a helicopter watching them at the time when the iranian boats came to capture their soldiers. They sound pretty angry about the whole thing. Iran shouldnt give these people any more excuses! for god sake, they already got enough excuses!

Here is one of their captions!

The news article says Persian but the staff of MSNBC and their site refers to the gulf as Arabian! Now you tell me whether this is intentional or not!

yeah exactly..
Capturing them is a very stupid move and will just create tension. but hey IR lives with tension, they create it and welcome it..

I wouldnt necessarily buy into the argument that they were in Iraqi waters. What did you expect them to say?

Plus as I had mentioned previously, this dangerous kidnapping routine started by the Western services when they began abducting Iranian diplomats and ex officials. Iran had threatened to return the favour and they may have just done that.

Nobody should be surprised by this. Iran did announce several times that if they want to kidnap Iranian officials then Iran has just as much ability to do the same to their officials and military members.
