Murray had his chances in the second set when he stood only two points from the set at 5-5 in the tiebreak, but Wawrinka held his nerve to snatch the set and complete victory. It was Wawrinka's first Davis Cup singles victory after three previous defeats.
Switzerland now have a chance to complete their victory if they can claim the doubles on Saturday.
