Roux claims Renato Sanches is lying about age
After being one of the standout performers at Euro 2016, Renato Sanches has become a household name overnight but Guy Roux has questioned his age.
Sanches, who is 18, has just been bought by Bayern Munich for an initial fee of €35 million, but these claims could have plenty of ramifications for the former Benfica midfielder.
According to official documents, Sanches was born in Lisbon on 18 August 1997, but French coach Roux believes that he is at least 24 years old.
“His birth date was declared years later,” he said while commentating. “That date is not right, I can assure you that Sanches is at least 23 or 24 years old.”
Three years ago, Chancel Mbemba, now at Newcastle United, was investigated by FIFA as he had recorded four different dates of birth, but it was quickly discovered that there had been an error.
Sanches has been key in Portugal reaching the Euro 2016 semi-final, recording back-to-back man of the match awards in the past two games.
