Iran builds advanced naval weapon
Mon, 04 Aug 2008 11:33:19

Iran has developed a high-tech naval weapons system capable of targeting any warship within a range of 300 kilometers from its shores.

A top Iranian commander explained that the weapons system introduces state-of-the-art technology never used before.

"The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps recently tested a naval weapon which is definitely capable of sending any warship within a distance of 300 km to the bottom of the sea," IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad-Ali Jafari told reporters Monday.

"The weapon design and production technology used in this weapon is completely indigenous to Iran and has never been employed by any other country," he added.

Jafari said the new weapon has gone into mass production after successful testing.

The commander also commented on Iran's ability to close off the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that connects the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. "The length of Iran's coastline along the Strait of Hormuz, its unique geographical position, and the coastal heights make it possible for Iran to close off the strait," said Jafari.

He added that Iranian armed forces could easily block the strait for an infinite time' using the available military equipment.

In early July, IRGC staged a major military maneuver to demonstrate its defense capabilities amid escalating US and Israeli threats of a strike against the country's nuclear facilities.

Jafari pointed out that the maneuver had achieved all its objectives, despite efforts made by Western media outlets to portray it otherwise.

"Eight missiles were fired simultaneously; however, poor images captured on camera gave rise to certain ambiguities," he said, referring to some speculations about the failure of the military exercise.

Iran: New high-tech naval missile tested

Tehran, 4 August (AKI) - Iran claims to have tested a new marine missile capable of targeting enemy naval vessels up to 300 kilometres.

"The new missile was built entirely with indigenous technology and has never been employed by any other country" said Mohammed Ali Jaafari, chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guards at a media conference in the capital Tehran on Monday.

"It is capable of sending any warship within a distance of 300 kilometres to the bottom of the sea," he said, quoted by official Iranian network Press TV.

Jaafari also mentioned Iran's ability to seal off the Strait of Hormuz, which runs between the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

"The length of Iran's coastline along the Strait of Hormuz, its unique geographical position, and the coastal heights make it possible for Iran to close off the strait," said Jaafari.

He also said that Iranian armed forces could easily block the strait for an indefinite period of time using the available military equipment if Iran was attacked.

The strait is the main passageway for up to 40 percent of the world's traded oil. The US has pledged to keep the key shipping route open in case of conflict with Iran.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out an attack against Iran if it does not suspend its nuclear enrichment programme.

Iran rejects suspicions harboured by the US and other western powers that its nuclear programme is aimed at building atomic weapons and says it is exercising its sovereign right to peaceful nuclear power.

In July, Iran's Revolutionary Guards successfully test fired various classes of missiles, including surface to surface and sea to air rockets as part of a large-scale military manoeuvre, dubbed the Great Prophet III.

What is it with you two posting contradictory statements?! The missile was tested yesterday (according to the 2nd article). According to the first, the missile has gone into mass production after successful testing!

I have heard that photo is photoshopped and asked you if this is correct or not. How "نقل و نبات", "دشمن و خائنان", ":2v1:", and "Shamkhani" are related to this question? By the way, isn't the correct Farsi "دشمنان و خائنان"?

Even though I'm with Iran's defense and deterrent capabilities I don't believe a bit of this news specially coming from such an unbiased news source like presstv. The second news source clearly indicates "IRAN CLAIMS", just reiterating the first news.
If Iran had this weapon completed the picture of this weapon would be all over the net with multiple video of test firring in Utube. That is what the term Deterrence means. Proof of existence and functional test, other wise no one will buy it, specially a millitary brass.
