Iran holds yacht with 5 UK nationals

AFP/File – Iranian Navy soldiers march during an annual military parade which marks Iran's eight-year war with Iraq, …

LONDON – Iran is holding five British sailors after stopping their racing yacht in the Persian Gulf, the British government said Monday. The move could heighten tensions between Iran and major world powers, including Britain, that are demanding a halt to its nuclear program. Oil prices spiked 2 percent to $77.45 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange as the news broke.

The yacht owned by Sail Bahrain was stopped on its way from the tiny island country to the Gulf city of Dubai on Wednesday when it "may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters," Britain's Foreign Office said. Sail Bahrain's Web site identified the yacht as the "Kingdom of Bahrain" and said it had been due to join the Dubai-Muscat Offshore Sailing Race, which was to begin Nov. 26. The event was to be the boat's first offshore race.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that British officials had been in touch about the matter with their Iranian counterparts for nearly a week. It was not immediately clear why British officials had decided to publicize the case now.

"I hope this issue will soon be resolved," Miliband said in the statement.
The statement added that the crew members "are still in Iran" and were "understood to be safe" but did not specify whether they are and what their legal status is. A call seeking clarification from Britain's Foreign Office was not immediately returned.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry official said he was not aware of reports a British yacht had been stopped. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.
Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard has the responsibility for protecting Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf. Officials from the Guard and from the regular navy could not be reached for comment on Monday.
Iran is holding three young Americans who strayed across the border from northern Iraq in July. The U.S. has appealed for their release, saying they were innocent hikers who accidentally crossed into Iran. Tehran has accused them of spying, a sign that they could be put on trial.

Fifteen British military personnel were detained in the Gulf by Iran under disputed circumstances in March 2007. Iran charged them with trespassing in its waters, and the Iranian government televised apologies by some of the captured crew.
All were eventually freed without an apology from Britain, which steadfastly insisted the crew members were taken in Iraqi waters, where they were authorized to be.

The phone rang unanswered at the Iranian Embassy in London.
Iran's nuclear chief on Monday said U.N. criticism of its nuclear program had pushed his country to retaliate by announcing ambitious plans for more uranium enrichment. With tensions rising over deadlocked negotiations, France said diplomacy was not working and sanctions against Iran were needed.

UK yacht crew detained by Iranian navy

Five Britons have been detained by the Iranian navy while sailing a yacht from Bahrain to Dubai, the Foreign Office (FCO) has said.

The sailors were crewing a boat belonging to Sail Bahrain when they were stopped on 25 November.

In a statement, the FCO said it was possible the crew, who are still in Iran, may have "strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters".

The five are understood to be safe and well and their families have been told.

FCO officials have had contact with Iran's ministry of foreign affairs and the Iranian embassy in the UK.

It is not known where the sailors are being held nor which club they had come from, but the FCO did confirm they were on their way to a Dubai-Muscat race.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he hoped the issue would be resolved "soon".

"FCO officials immediately contacted the Iranian authorities in London and in Tehran on the evening of 25 November, both to seek clarification and to try and resolve the matter swiftly.

"Our ambassador in Tehran has raised the issue with the Iranian foreign ministry and we have discussed the matter with the Iranian embassy in London," he said.

In another news, Iran released the five brits after getting a personally signed apology letter from former UK PM, Tony Blair.

Whats the point of this circus. Didn't they have enough the last time they captured a group of soldiers, and after they kissed their asses goodbye?

Where did that lead us?

This is just an opportunity for a few baboons to take a pictures with "Khareji's" and put it up on their walls at homw. They'll be given some Koubideh, taught the intricacies of Mahdi the 12th Emam and sent on their way home where they can participate in an episode of "Locked Up Abraod - Among Baboons". ;)

This is a world popularity contest which the IR Einsteins are trying to win!

The funny thing is, this was a personal yacht and not military. The IR is really desparate. They are extremely insecure and this is anoher chance for blackmail.

Iran confirms detaining British nationals

IRGC's naval commander Ali Reza Tang-siri

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has confirmed that it has detained several British nationals in the Persian Gulf waters.

IRGC's naval commander Ali Reza Tang-siri on Tuesday confirmed the detention and said the British nationals were arrested by IRGC's naval forces, Fars news agency reported.

The top commander said confronting foreign forces in the Persian Gulf was among the IRGC's duties.

This is the third time that Iran arrests Birirtish nationals on its national waters.

In March 2007, Iranian forces seized eight British Royal Navy sailors and seven marines for trespassing Iran's territorial waters. They were released the following month.

In a similar incident in 2004, eight British servicemen were detained in the same area but were later freed.

At the time, Iranian officials confiscated espionage devices from the British nationals.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said in a statement on Monday that five British nationals were detained on November 25 in the Persian Gulf after their yacht reportedly trespassed on Iranian waters. He said the yacht was en route from Bahrain to Dubai when Iranian forces arrested the Britons.

Miliband said the UK had no confrontation with Iran over the issue, expressing hope that he issue would "soon be resolved."

wow well done iran. great show of strength. we CAPTURED 5 civilians on a YACHT! loool.

Mr Miliband said: "This is a human story of five young yachtsmen. It's got nothing to do with politics, it's got nothing to do with nuclear enrichment programmes... it has no relationship to any of the other, bigger issues." He added: "These are five civilians - they're yachtsmen. They were going about their sport and it seems they may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters. We look forward to the Iranian government dealing with this promptly and clearly."

Dubai-Muscat Offshore Race organisers said the crew, who were preparing for a race, may have been "drifting" after experiencing propeller problems. Louay Habib, from the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, told the BBC the shore crew for the boat the Kingdom of Bahrain had said "there was no wind at the time, and they told us that they were organising for a tow to come and get them". He added: "It's purely speculation but they would have probably been drifting... in 10 hours they could well have strayed into Iranian waters."

Actually its the WEST who are politicizing this incident. IRANIAN Navy would have done the same if some Indians, Pakistanis, Kuwaitis or any other nationals have crossed its borders. Any country would have done the same. If you as an Iranian (I guess you are) go cross the border of any country riding a kiddy bicycle and get captured by border petrol how redicoulus you would sound if you cry saying "well I am civilian on a bicycle why do you detain me?!!

IRANIAN Navy is just protecting its border. They do this very often, as I said only a couple of months ago some Kuwaits who were fishing by mistake in Iranian waters were detained and then after a few day sent back to Kuwait.
