Iran Criticizes Iraq for Increasing Crude Exports

TEHRAN, Iran November 2, 2013 (AP)

Iran's Oil Minister says Iraq has increased its crude oil exports to compensate for a fall in Iranian exports as a result of sanctions over Tehran's suspected nuclear program, calling the policy "not friendly at all." Bijan Namdar Zanganeh is quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency Saturday as saying that Iraq's oil policies are to Iran's detriment.

Iran's oil exports are believed to have fallen from about 2.5 million to over 1.2 million barrels a day as a result of a Western oil embargo against Iran over Tehran's uranium enrichment program. The U.S. and its allies fear that Iran may ultimately be able to develop a nuclear weapon, a charge Iran denies. Iran generally enjoys good relations with Iraq's Shiite-led government.

Iran's inflation hits 36.2 pct in 12 months

I'm a little dumbfounded by this! Anyone know how they're keeping the USD exchange rate around 3000 T's? It was around 3700 last year, with that level of inflation, it should be around 5000 T's today not 3000. How are they maintaining that exchange rate? Are they subsidizing it with foreign reserves? With $40 billion annual imports (as per the article above), that's a $16 billion USD subsidy! Or am I looking at this the wrong way?

Iran's exports is a speck in total world production of perhaps a 100 million barrels a day. North Dakota and Texas alone can cover Iran's shortfall.

The devaluation of Rial you are expecting WILL happen. It just doesn't happen on a daily basis as in a free market. For close to 10 years, the dollar was kept in the 900-1200 toman while everything doubled and tripled. Then suddenly the bottom fell out last year and the dollar went up to close to 4000 toman in a matter of weeks wiping out those famous 20% a year returns.

Actually, in a big bilakh to the IR, Iraq has ramped up production as well. This is all a continuation of Iraq trying to breakaway from Iran's religious circle of influence and exert their autonomy both religiously and in foreign relations. Maliki coming to the US is another example of that.

There's a huge difference between 2 years ago and today though. At the time they were subsidizing the exchange rate with the trade surplus and foreign reserves which were estimated to be over $100 billion. We no longer have that trade surplus and in fact running at around $5 billion USD deficit for non-oil imports according to the article above. The foreign reserves should also be in the $30-40 billion UDS range by now, so this is path seems completely unsustainable to me, even for the next few months. That might be the reason Rohani's so eager to strike a deal in a very short period of time, because a few months down the road, it looks like poo poo will hit the fan big time.
