Iran Plans to Unplug Internet, Create Its Own
http://www.newser.com/story/119645/iran-plans-to-unplug-internet-create-its-own.html

Iran is waging war on open Internet. Looking to limit the cyber-infiltration of Western ideas, Iran's telecommunications chief claimed that, in two years time, all Iranians would be forced to use a state-censored, fully-internal Internet. About 60% of the nation's homes and businesses are expected to be on it much sooner than that, he added. Iran sees the move toward heightened online policing as a way to uphold Islamic moral values, though whether it can truly block the world's Internet remains an open question, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Iran has seen a proliferation of pro-democracy blogs and anti-regime activity made viral by Facebook and Twitter, and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials support Internet regulation as a response to the "soft war" waged on them by the West. The country first plans to roll out its new network in parallel with the existing, open network, but expects to eventually make a full switch. The 11% of citizens who have Internet access will be forced to use a non-Microsoft operating system and a Google alternative called "Ya Hagh" (Oh, Justice). Click to read about Hosni Mubarak's penalty for trying to unplug his nation.

An Impossible task - but well expected from a totalitarian regime.
IR can ultimately control phone lines - but what are they going to do with satellites? Impossible

Satellite-based Internet does not exist in Iran as far as I know.

This task is technically possible but extremely stupid. it is like going back to the Internet of 70s and early 80s where most databases were centralized.

The main reason for the huge explosion in usefulness of the Internet is the decentralized data distribution with billions of contributors. Trying to replicate it with an isolated, centrally-controlled network turns it into a farce. Which I think what they want from their Internet.

As far as I know, China also has its own search engine, and controls all the search content..

As deerouz jan said, it is technically possible..and I dont have a doubt it'll get implemented..while akhounds from Qom watch porn through internet, they limit Iranian ppl and businesses to "Islamic" version of Internet. basically closing down existing %1 awareness among ppl to zero.

nothing is worse than religious fanaticism.. :(

Satellite internet does exist but its not attractive as you connect via dial-up which will be your upload speed, but if this plan happens and becomes compulsory which i don't think will happen a lot of people will be getting sat connections.

Satelite internet does exist but costs alot..the one case that I know..cost him about 3000 dollar set up ( I might be off a 1000-1500 dollar ) and around 180 dollars a month...but as u can expect speed is fantastic....now I have not seen or talked to this guy in awhile..6 months or so..so if anything has changed..I shall find out..

reg. internet and things of sort..IRI can go" f" itself till blue in the face or red in the butt...lol.whichever comes first......these idiots try every year to cut down on dishes but failed miserably...I mean anything is possible..they could stop internet....but the cost and organisation to do it makes it very unlikely...

For u guys not having the previlige of living in I-ran...our gov. says alot and our papers also print anything...I would not take them especially in this case that serious

Its a joke. To take them seriously first the need to prove they can plan for something that can be delivered in a month or so. Until then all the plannings are at best daily with salevaat and doaa being use as main resources.

The more the SOB regime and their supporters do this, the more they show their fear and the sooner people will get rid of them. This would push Iran further back in enabling it to compete with the rest of the world and will end up shortening the life of the regime. That means the sooner, the regime and their supporters will have the rope hang around their necks and executed by the people of Iran for their crimes against people of Iran. It might end up not being a bad thing. These dumb Islamic republic people and dictators in the world dont learn from history nor each other.

It is a losing war - telecom is moving too fast. At the era when there are cel-phones that directly hook-up to satellites without any need for satellite dishes or on the ground connection providers.......... IR can succeed in having some short term impacts in the short term - but in the long run they stand no chance.
