Read Head Coach Bob Peeters' reaction to Saturday's friendly at Portsmouth
Iain Liddle reports
It was mission accomplished for Bob Peeters on Saturday afternoon as his Charlton side emerged injury-free and with a victory from their final friendly encounter.
Especially pleasing will have been the fact that two of his summer striking signings looked sharp against Portsmouth with Igor Vetokele and George Tucudean both showing glimpses of their ability with clinical finishes.
A familiar face in Danny Hollands drew Portsmouth level after Vetokele’s opener and while Johnnie Jackson could have made the result more comprehensive with a second-half penalty, which was saved by Paul Jones, all boxes were ticked at the final whistle.
“I was happy with the first half but in the second half the pitch was dry and we had been here since yesterday so it was a long journey,” said Peeters.
“The most important thing is that everybody is fit and we don’t have any injuries.
“I don’t think the fitness is already at 100 per cent but this is not a sprint it is a marathon.
“It takes a while to get used to each other because if you have a lot of new signings it takes time to settle in for the new players. Again, the most important thing is that everybody's fit and well. We will see next week if we are ready enough.”
Meanwhile, when quizzed on what his team may look like at Brentford next Saturday in the Championship opener, Peeters said places in his side were still up for grabs.
“We are always looking for players who can add something to our team so you never know,” he said, when asked about potential incoming transfers.
“But at this moment we are happy with the team and this is the squad that will play.
“You always have something in your mind, but we have a week to go and anything can happen.
“There could be injuries in training so we need to see who is fit to play against Brentford and we will pick the team that has the best chance to get something out of the game.”
Peeters also confirmed that summer signing Franck Moussa will resume full training with the group on Monday after overcoming a frustrating back problem which has hampered his start to life at Charlton.
“He has been working for a long time,” said the Charlton boss.
“He might be ready for the first game but he is not going to be ready to play 90 minutes.”
The former Belgium striker was also quizzed about a current international, Reza Ghoochannejhad, who has also resumed training at Sparrows Lane within the past fortnight.
Ghoochannejhad is not yet fit enough to be considered for first-team action and Peeters admitted that his future will, once again, be discussed shortly.
“He is working on his fitness and he had a long season with the World Cup,” he said.
“At this moment he is getting fitter and fitter.
“Anything can happen until August 31st. He is a good player, but if teams come in you cannot hold a player back who wants to go after a World Cup.
“The decision is with him. At this moment we are training him to be fit and we will see what happens.”
