Picking a Movie for tonight

Thank you all for the help. We had a "Persian Night" last night with the wife and the little ones (in the Avatar)! Some chelo-kabob, akbar-mashdi ice-cream and of course Marmoolak.

The little ones had always loved chelo-kabob and the rice usually puts them in a very nice sleepy mood after, which is great for us, but to see them eat akbar-mashdi ice cream was a definite treat! ;)

As for the movie, the subtittles were hard to read, but it was an amazing movie. I had to do my own translations for the wife at a few points, but overall she was very taken back by the depth of this movie, as was I.
Smart plot, inteligent and witty conversations and great sarcasm. Hollywood's got nothing on us! I'm already excited about the next Persian Night! ;)

The only question that I have is are there really Mullahs in Iran like the character that's in the hospital with him at the beginning of the movie (whose Aba Marmoolak steals)?

well I believe promoting one's history and culture should start in our country, and when our own government spends more money in Najaf and Karbala and still have surpluses to send to Lebonan, and terrorist Palestine insted of rebuilding our historical sites and promoting our culture with books, documentaries,... and educating the world about our great past to counter the crap Greek sterotype, there is not much room for us to complain about hollywood.
Totally agree...our gov. should be spending money promoting our rich culture rather than funding terrorists and making us look bad.

the problem is not the American media. Its starts with us, what have we done to promote our history? by spending more money in Najaf, Karbala, Mecca and Mashad than re-buidling Perspoils and our other historical sites?
So what you are saying, we should make a ZARIH for
Cyrus and Darius and spend the money on their
movies? :)

To be honest with you, an average Joe or Hasanak in Iran
hardly knows much about Cyrus and Darius and sees
Pasaregard and Persepolis as something attractive to tourists
than a sort of a shrine. The local Imam-Zadeh might be much
more history to him than those places.

We hardly knew about Persepolis and called it
Takhte-Jamshid until 17th century...and if it wasn't for
archeologists, the fact that Jews kept a great grudge
towards Babelions and hence a love for Cyrus for his
defeating Babelon such that they dedicated a chapter
or two of their fables in Turah, and psuodo history
mixed with fables by Greeks about granduer of Cyrus
and all, we would still think of Persepolis and other
historical sites as Takhte Jamshid and Rostam.

Who knows maybe they were rightly called Rostam
and Jamshid as in Shahnameh; Bloody Greeks and
Jews twisted their names too! :)

By the way, it is intersting and somewhat relevant to the
topic that Alexander is mentioned in Shahnameh too.
He is son of Iranian King of kings and grandson of Philip
(Filghous as Ferdowsi calls him); otherwise how could he
be so victorious with no noble blood in his veins!

everything you say regarding our current situation is sad and true, but the question is than why the hell are we bitch about Hollywood not making good movies about Persians and our history when we treat our own past like shit and don't give a damn about it?

Exactly!

However, I do believe that when it comes to history we,
people in diaspora, tend to forget that we have a history
other than Cyrus and Darius too.
We are not just Persians. Our civilization peaked to even
higher status in other times such as times of Saljukids,
Khwarazm Shahis and Safavids. In fact, Islam flourished
and became sophisticated more under these Persian/Turkic
rulers. (Yes Iranians are not just Persians or only Arians. We
are partly Turkic- at least by culture and language. And race,
only Ahura knows that we are party whom. :) )

If you liked Marmoulak, another great movie from the same director is "Leyli baa man ast". It is hilarious! Though probably only those who exprienced the years of war (1980-1988) in Iran would appreciate its subtle comedy. Your family may find it a little confusing.

Deerouz jan, did you read page one of this thread? It's my suggestion too. I love this movie. It's easily one of my favorites and isn't this pathetic and very "loos" type of humor that seems to be all over Iranian cinema. The acting is also outstanding. It's amazing how hilarious they make just driving in a car and talking and thinking.
