Now it seems Democrats are controlling white house, Senate and Congress; what woudl be their main policies in the next four years? Iraq? Afghanistan? Economy?Domestic policies?

One issue that concerns me a lot is the so-called "fairness doctorine" that some dems wanted to use to limit opposing talk shows. I hope Obama puts an end to this attempt (though if he doesn't, the Supeme court could).

It is hard to know for certain.

Health care has got to be there.
This time, they actually have the votes to do whatever they want with health care.

I am sure there will be a revision to taxes.

Likely here will be government spending of some kind. Alternative energy and infrastructure will likely get 10s of billions.

Probably one of the most important items on the agenda is the revision to financial regulations. This one will have deep lasting impact. If they get it wrong then the US will pay dearly for it down the road as we just did due to revisions in 1999, 2003, and 2006.

Without doubt, the economy has to be on top of the agenda. After that, I'd say Afghanistan is currently the biggest mess, but if the agreement for US troops to stay in Iraq doesn't pass shortly (which may apparently be put to a very risky referendum now), that would become the second biggest, if not the biggest problem very fast. Fortunately or unfortunately, Iran has moved way down the list IMHO.

Deerouz JAn, I am a news junky, I have tried to "tarke etiyad" without much success :), but do not recall hearing or reading about this.
Where have you heard about this? Looks odd at the time that media (according to the Repulican) have been sort of, in love with Democrates, at least as it relates to the Presidential election.

Iranpak jan, here is the news:

Schumer on Fox: Fairness Doctrine ‘fair and balanced’
By Bob Cusack Posted: 11/04/08 11:30 AM [ET]

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday defended the so-called Fairness Doctrine in an interview on Fox News, saying, “I think we should all be fair and balanced, don’t you?”

Schumer’s comments echo other Democrats’ views on reviving the Fairness Doctrine, which would require radio stations to balance conservative hosts with liberal ones.

Asked if he is a supporter of telling radio stations what content they should have, Schumer used the fair and balanced line, claiming that critics of the Fairness Doctrine are being inconsistent.

“The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] to limit pornography on the air. I am for that… But you can’t say government hands off in one area to a commercial enterprise but you are allowed to intervene in another. That’s not consistent.”

In 2007, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a close ally of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told The Hill, “It’s time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine. I have this old-fashioned attitude that when Americans hear both sides of the story, they’re in a better position to make a decision.”

Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) last year said, “I believe very strongly that the airwaves are public and people use these airwaves for profit. But there is a responsibility to see that both sides and not just one side of the big public questions of debate of the day are aired and are aired with some modicum of fairness.”

Conservatives fear that forcing stations to make equal time for liberal talk radio would cut into profits so significantly that radio executives would opt to scale back on conservative radio programming to avoid escalating costs and interference from the FCC.

They also note that conservative radio shows has been far more successful than liberal ones.

In his Fox interview, Schumer, who heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, also weighed in on the election, predicting that Democrats will end up with between 56 and 58 seats in the Senate.

If Schumer does not understand the difference between regulating pornography and controlling political opinions on the airways, he is the biggest idiot in the US Senate.

Some of the views expressed by other dems (Durbin,Feinstein) in this regard are outright fascistic.

Thanks Deerouz JAn. I have to say this is the first time I am hearing this, I have heard "fair and balance slogan though :)), but I do not think this is a pressing issue right now as there are tons of other important matters than need to be tackled first. I hardly think anybody wanting to change the "fairness doctrine" anytime soon. I watch Lehrer hour on PBC everyday. Lehrer brings both sides and an issue everytime and let the viewer decide. To this day, I do not know if Lehrer is Democrat leaning or pro Repulican and that is what I like about the program.

Dear Iranpak, the "fairness doctrine" (which forced the TV and radio to give equal time to both liberal and conservative viewpoints) was eliminated by the Reagan administration. Now some democrats want to re-enact it to counter the conservative talk show radio (Rush and the like) by limiting the time they can get on the airways. TV channels are not the target.

If Obama goes along with the Fairness Doctrine he will lose my vote in the next election. Plain and simple.

The ridiculous speech codes we have to abide by are intrusive enough; last thing I'm willing to stand for is seeing one party legislate dissent into silence.

If the fairness doctrine was in effect before Reagan, how come there was no attempt to strike it down through the supreme court? It sounds so against the 1st amendment. Or was it tried and failed?

Maybe because back then political Talk Radio wasn't as popular as it later became. It wasn't as big an issue.

That's just speculation on my part, of course.

Are they gonna do the same with print too because from what I got, most print media is pro liberals?

I do not think obama is interested to do anything about fairness doctorine.

democrats have domainated the new medium "Internet" and I think obama thinks that is balancing things out.

besides territorial radio has been on demise for quite a while advertising dollars are gradually moving away from it.

Democrats in congress might try to pass something like this but most likely senate republicans will block it and that will be the end of it.

Another policy change that unfortunately, unfortunately is near certainty that will happen is amnesty for illegal immigrants or some kind of reform for it. Democrats are going to fall over themselves to make this happen because they need the latino vote.

It would be a horrifically bad move for the US. With all the hoopla around illegal immigration, the truth of it is that the current situation is orders of magnitude better than any of the proposals on the table. There is actually huge benefits to the current illegal system that people do not appreciate.
