Tehran: An Iranian man who claimed to have survived eight days under the rubble of his home after a devastating earthquake last month made the story up to get free morphine, local officials said.
"He is an addict and a liar," said a doctor at a hospital in Zarand, south-eastern Iran. "He had no signs of dehydration, bruises, or even dust on his clothes when he came into hospital in the morning."
The official news agency IRNA had said Ahmad Habibzadeh, 40, had survived eight days under rubble and had been dug out by locals. Zarand was one of the worst affected towns in the quake on February 22, which killed 612 and injured 1400.
