I had been using Goldline for long time but the past 2 months I were not able to call Iran at all. What VOIP companies do you use to call Iran. Does anyone have any suggestion? Currently my only option is skype.

I subscribed to Startec around 2 months ago and I am a happy camper since.
It's such a convenience, no code no busy line.

I can make calls from my cell and home and never happend to dial a number twice.
I pick up the phone and speak for not hours but for a good amount of time almost three times a week and I end up paying $30 at the end of the month . Go for it you gonna like it

I am in US and use Startec and I am happy. If you want to register, find a an Iranian site that promote it and register from there to help a hamvatan. I used the link on the calendar page to register.

i am not SUPER happy with them, as i said they have their days of low quality, not possible to connect, but overall i give them 6/10
I agree with Pooya for weekend calls. It does not fail often on weekdays.

Tried both Startec and NECC. NECC more or less is like Startec. The only difference is in the prices. If you call Tehran, Startec is better (4c per min), but if you call Shahrestan, NECC is better (7c per min).

Startec: Tehran 4c Shahrestan 10c

NECC: 7c for both

I just visit them through the Iranian calendar page that takes you to directly to Iran specific page and the price is 3.5c to Tehran and 7.1c to the rest of the Iran.

Maybe off topic, but I use MSN messenger and webcam. ADSL is cheap in Iran now. My brother has ADSL in Iran and he pays only 10,000 toman per month. MSN webcam works great for me. I talk for hours with some disconnection, if you do not use the webcam sound quality is much better. I also use Gold line but recently it does not connect properly. I may try what other have suggested here.

In the US, Startec wants to switch your local carrier. Don't like that. Too many complications.
That's incorrect. I have signed up and they never asked me to change my local or long distance carrier and I am in US.

Dear Valued Startec Customer,

Thank you for choosing Startec as your new long-distance service provider. We look forward serving you.

At this time, however, we have been unable to process your recent request to switch to Startec because there is a switching restriction on your line.

In order to remove this restriction, please contact your local phone company and ask

them to add Startec as your long distance and local toll provider (selecting Startec as your local toll provider is optional, but will help simplify your billing). All you have to do is let your local phone company know that you want Startec (code 0444) to provide your long distance services.

When this process is complete, please call our test number at 1-700-555-4310 to confirm that Startec is your primary long-distance service provider.

In addition, please notify one of our PIC department specialists at 1-800-213-6004

(9:00 AM-11:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM Saturday, Sunday,

and holidays, EST) that this process is complete, and give them the confirmation number provided to you by the local phone company.

If you are unable to contact your local phone company, please feel free to contact our PIC department and we will be happy to assist you.

We hope that this issue can be resolved quickly, and in the meantime, we suggest that you continue to dial 1-800-483-1494 before all of your long-distance calls so that you benefit with terrific savings from our great low rates.

With Best Regards,

Startec Customer Care Team

Dear Flint,

Let me first admit that "That's incorrect" was a poor choice of words and I apologize for that.

I visited the Iran specific page of startec and it says "Make calls to Iran from your cell phone without contracts or switching:" In my case, I never changed my long distance carrier and use Startec by dialing their 800 number like a calling card.

Flint jan, I think thats the same in Canada. They dont want u to switch the carrier but to inform your local carrier that ur getting your long distance service from Startec so they dont charge u.

It happened to us once that although we notified Bell(our local carrier) beforehand, in the first month we used Startec we were charged helfty long distance bill by Bell!!

Each startec customer has to notify their local carrier in advance that they will use startec long distance, and not local carrier's service to avoice extra charges..

no I dont dial any number before that. I dial solely destination number from local phone. no extra number(like phone cards),etc..

Well, as you can tell this whole thing gives me pause. Why do they want "switching" restrictions lifted and deny me service until it is. What do they want to switch? Now, as Javeed mentioned I tried to find an 800 number but couldn't. May be it is changed now. My bottom line questions is about quality. Do you get "toll quality" connections? No choppiness. Have yet to use a calling card that has given me consistent, high quality.

Again, I dont think they want u to switch carriers but rather notify ur local carrier to avoid double charges for your long distance calls. But again best way is to call them and ask them all the details..

As for the quality, yes it is a toll quality connection. very clear and no cut-offs. There are at times in weekends that bc of dialing traffic to Iran, its hard to make the call, but once it did it wont get cut off as most dialing cards do.
