He has been quiet since the 1388 uprising. I am always sceptical of these types of people that go from interviewing every day to being dead quiet.

Really can't stand the guy. From destroying so many careers and being a rabid foaming at the mouth revolutionary to some sort of intellectual now.

Doesn't that basically summarizes all the so called "Eslah talab" people in Iran !!!
Ex revolutionaries who were kissing the hand of Imam Khomeyni and now have turned into intellectual peace loving people !!!

Khatami, Mussavi, Karubi and ... most of them were giving interviews left and right in 1388 and then now are all quiet. At least this guy has one documentary to show for !!

Musavi and Karroubi are under house arrest and say something every once in a while. Not that it really matters. Makhmalbaf is living outside of Iran getting paid to make movies. Apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges indeed !!
Two were suppose to be the leaders of the movement, third one ( khatami) is the poster boy for Eslahat and this man ( Makhmalbaf) a movie director.

The first 3 kept mostly quiet right from beginning while some others did at least spoke up earlier.
The first 3 , although in Iran have much deeper roots and ties in the regime which have kept them relatively safe from prosecution by the regime while the last, being a movie director can easily be targeted even outside of Iran and people like him are wasting away in Evin right now.

At the end, my expectation from political leaders are much higher than some movie director to begin with in terms of being vocal about injustice. So, yes, it is apple and oranges for me too.

Does anyone know where we can download or watch this movie ? I am wondering what was the conclusion that he came up with.

Dastforoosh was great too (one of his first movies) Have you seen it? One of the most innovative works of those times.

If you have time:

Synopsis

An Iranian film maker and his son travel to Israel to investigate a world religion with around 7 million followers, which originated in Iran about a hundred and seventy years ago. Youth from all over the world come to Haifa, the center of this religion, to serve. Those who serve in the gardens that surround the holy places develop peace loving attitudes through their interactions with nature.

As the father accompanies a gardener from Papua New Guinea, he finds similarities between the teachings of this religion, which was born in Iran, and the positive ideas promoted by people like Mandela and Gandhi. The father asks whether Iran would still be pursuing nuclear weapons if the Iranian people had adopted a peaceful religion. He shares this idea with his son, who is also investigating Religion, but the son strongly believes that all religions tend to bring about destruction. As a result of these arguments, father and son separate from one another and pursue their own paths.
This film shows two completely different views on Religion. The director's camera portrays examples of two generations of Iranians through this story....
