These guys visit each other every couple of months! i dont see my parents this often!

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez arrived in Tehran late Saturday for the third time during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a fellow fiery critic of the US, Iranian television reported.

Chavez, accompanied by his foreign, communication, energy, industry and economy ministers, was met at the airport by Iranian Industries Minister Ali-Reza Tahmasbi, the television said. During the two-day visit, the last leg of a tour that has taken Chavez to Russia and Belarus -- both recently at loggerheads with the US -- he will hold talks with top Iranian officials and discuss bilateral, international and regional issues, Iranian media said.

Iran is OPEC's fourth largest crude producer while Venezuela is also a major player in the cartel and the two countries enjoy warm ties and cooperation in the energy sector. During the visit, the countries are expected to sign a number of agreements including for the construction of 7,000 houses, a petrochemical plant and a vocational training centre in Venezuela.

Venezuelan Ambassador to Tehran Arturo Anibal Gallegos Ramiraz told the official IRNA news agency that Chavez's visit was "aimed at bolstering mutual cooperation in economic, industrial and political fields.""Iran and Venezuela through exchange of visits can prove that their relations are at the best possible level," he said. Chavez is the most vocal cheerleader in Latin America for Iran and its nuclear programme, which is feared by the West to be a cover for weapons development.

The trip comes at a time when Iran is threatened with toughened UN Security Council sanctions for its continued refusal to freeze controversial nuclear work. The United States, which broke diplomatic ties with Iran in 1979, has been spearheading the international campaign to stop Iran's enrichment programme and it has never ruled out ruled out a military option to halt the drive.

Chavez is expected to visit the land-based facilities of Iran's South Pars gas field in Asaluyeh off the Gulf coast and speak at Tehran's Science and Industry University, where Ahmadinejad used to teach before being elected president in 2005.
Ahmadinejad toured Latin America in January in a bid to seek support from the region's leftist leaders who share his scornful defiance of the United States.

Venezuela and several other Latin American countries are members of the Non-Aligned Movement that at a summit last year emphatically backed Iran's right to nuclear energy.

Very smart comment. Venezuela is a major exporter of gasoline. This is again in line with the timing as well as the abruptness of the change in gasoline sales in Iran. It has got everything to do with IR being scared of US gasoline sanctions. Note that for example, although the plan calls for gasoline to be sold at market price beyond the 100 lt/month, they are in fact not selling market price gasoline in Iran. The reason appears to be so that they can stockpile gasoline so in case of sanctions they can last longer.

Judging form the high profile that Chavez carried out this trip it appears to me that the IR must be paying him a lot of money from Iranian people's pocket. They may have already paid him a billion or two. Further from the patter of trips where Chavez went to Russia and now Putin is in the US, my guess is that Russia is key here. You can bet that Putin is milking every last cent here.

Also, it is now clear why the IR put such a public display of what they called arazel o obaash. They were getting ready for the upcoming gasoline crisis. IR will do anything, absolutely anything, including killing half the Iranians to stay in power.

Probably for $2B. This so that the bribe to Chavez from Iranian people's pocket looks legit. Chavez looks so happy. He has been in great difficulty economically back home and really needed some money short-term.

FP once again your entire post is on speculation.

Probably wont go through.

Well surely you dont mean a bribe do you ? thats unheard of in the world of politics, this is shocking, and i am completely appalled, a bribe !

They were getting ready for the upcoming gasoline crisis. IR will do anything, absolutely anything, including killing half the Iranians to stay in power
Yes because that is always beneficial for a country is to kill of 1/2 its population. Dont allow your personal feelings about the IR make you conclude wrongly. Contrary to popular belief the IR has accomplished quite a lot of infrastructure (relative to our neighbors) for the benefit of Iran, and they did it w/o the help of the US. The IR has its problems too, with the restriction of freedoms high on that list.

Very well observation FT jan..Thats 100% the case.

The sad part is, they are allying with dangerous thugs, cuz if this Gasoline sanction goes through(God forbid), Russia and Venezuela will be the first ones pulling out of trades with Iran. So in reality, it happens whatever is planned to happen, and AN cannot prevent further chaos no matter how much $ he spends..

CNN was saying today that both Iran and Venezuela have now agreed to construct two methanol plants, one in Iran and the other in Venezuela. The plant will be able to produce one million ton of methanol per year.

Methanol could be the future alternative to gasoline and such. I dont understand why not making ethanol instead of methanol?
