Anti-government protesters in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi have reportedly seized army vehicles and weapons amid worsening turmoil in the African nation.

A local witness said that a section of the troops had joined the protesters on Sunday as chaos swept the streets of the city, worst hit by the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year old rule.

Local residents told Al Jazeera that at least 200 people had died in Benghazi alone. The New York-based Human Rights Watch on Sunday put the countrywide death toll at 173. The rights group said its figure was "conservative".

News of the death toll came as residents of Benghazi reported renewed gunfire from security forces in the city. Witnesses also told Al Jazeera that a police academy in the city had been set ablaze.

Meanwhile in the capital, Tripoli, supporters of the government took to the streets in large numbers, as security forces prevented others from mounting large demonstrations against Gaddafi.

This came as witnesses told Al Jazeera that anti-government protesters were heading to Gaddafi's compound in the city of Al-Zawia near Tripoli, with the intention of burning the building down.

This is pretty graphic. I think it is from Benghazi. Protesters have taken over the city and hanged some security officers right outside their headquarters. Can not wait to see this happen to Radan.

They don't look like hanged. It looks more like people climbing up the poles.

Snipers shot protesters, artillery and helicopter gunships were used against crowds of demonstrators, and thugs armed with hammers and swords attacked families in their homes as the Libyan regime sought to crush the uprising.
"Dozens were killed ... We are in the midst of a massacre here," a witness told Reuters. The man said he helped take victims to hospital in Benghazi.
Libyan Muslim leaders told security forces to stop killing civilians, responding to a spiralling death toll from unrest which threatens veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi's authority.
Mourners leaving a funeral for protesters in the eastern city of Benghazi came under fire, killing at least 15 people and wounding many more. A hospital official said one of those who died was apparently struck on the head by an anti-aircraft missile, and many had been shot in the head and chest.

I do not want to diminish what is happening in Iran but look at what these guys are facing. Gunships, anti aircraft missiles!

In Iran we got a several meymoons on back of motorcycles scaring off protesters.

The Libyan Ambassador to the Arab league has resigned saying he can not be a part of the regime that kills innocent civilians.

The Libyan ambassador to China also just resigned on Al Jazeera asking for the army to intervene. Ghaddafi is in deep shit.

Gotta give credit: the events in Tunisia and Egypt and now Libya might as well be called "Aljazeera revolution".

Goes to show the only difference between us and westerners is about freedom of speech. Once there is a tribune to echo different voices, everything start to change.

I think Ghaddafi is in a race against time if he has not left the country he will very soon. If they get their hands on him he is fucked. Multiple reports are saying he just left.

And all tyrants and killers end up looking like blood-sucking vampires on the outside that they are on the inside.

2210 GMT: Libya's 2nd Secretary in its Embassy in China, Hussein Sadiq Al Misrati, has just quit in an on-air interview with Al Jazeera, saying he is not honorred to represent a regime that kills its own people.

Al Misrati asked other diplomats to follow his action and called on the army not to attack protesters.

And the diplomat claimed that Muammar Qaddafi's son Saif Al Islam, who was supposed to speak on State TV tonight, will not do so --- he was shot by his brother Mutasam in a fight for control.

I never gave a crap about this guy, but after what I witnessed in New York last year during our protest against AN's presence, I hate this cunt(Ghaddafi) with a passion. He had a mob of monster-looking criminals gathering in front of UN and pushing/shoving anyone who tried to mock Ghaddafi's speech. It was unbelievable how tolerant the police was towards his thugs in NYC!.

I hope he gets raped.
