I think the workers' story is true but also taken out of the context and blown out of proportion by Europeans to sabotage Qatar's hosting. There is for sure some financial motives behind it. I Donn't mean that Qatar was a good choice or the process was not corrupt.
My limited experience with the subcontinent folks in Doha is that they were generally content with the opportunity, They had no health insurance or benefits and they get paid less compared to Europeans, but they still can send savings home to support their family.
What they have now should be compared to their life back home not to the standard of living in Norway. Unfortunately the ugly side of the world is that it is not fair!
